Alan Tonnemacher Obituary

DANVERS – Mr. Alan Charles Tonnemacher, 77 of Danvers, longtime resident of Springfield, MA and loving husband of Mary Ann (Hatala) Tonnemacher, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 28th, 2024 at Salem Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Springfield, Alan was the son of the late Charles A. and June L. (Bashaw) Tonnemacher. Raised and educated in Springfield, he was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School.

In the early years, Alan worked in the family-learned trade of sheet metal. It was here that he witnessed the hard work and labor dedicated to the profession by his grandfather and father.  He spent the next 14 years working for CONRAIL, and the last 25 years of his career in sales for The Home Depot. He and his wife Mary Ann would relocate from Albuquerque, NM to Pittsburgh, PA and finally to the North Shore of Boston, MA so they could be closer to family. Alan was an extremely warm and friendly person, showing genuine interest in everyone who crossed his path. It was always said that Alan never met a stranger.

A loving and loyal family man, Alan was happiest when spending time with his family. Together, Alan and Mary Ann traveled extensively, taking in the culture and experience of all places they visited. A child at heart, Alan loved learning and exploring.  He was known for his incredible memory, his love for history and interest in nature and all creatures big and small. He taught his children the art of catching nightcrawlers and fireflies, fishing and climbing trees. He loved watching his children play sports and he and Mary Ann would continue this tradition with the grandchildren. He was their biggest supporter and would faithfully attend the games regardless of any inclement weather. Alan had a great sense of humor; he loved to dance and engage in conversation on a variety of topics. He was very generous with his outward expressions of love towards his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Mary Ann with whom Alan shared over 20 years of marriage, he is survived by his children, Kerry Anderson and her husband, Jason of South Burlington, VT, Eric Tonnemacher and his wife, Angela of Haverhill, MA and Malyn Dziurzynski of Waterbury, VT; his grandchildren, Luke, William, Elise, Logan, Ezra and Casimir; his sisters, Karen Metcalf of Westfield, MA and Lynn Noonan and her husband, Paul of Springfield, MA; a special Aunt, Joy Harrigan of The Villages, FL, an Uncle, several cousins and nephews. In addition to his parents, Alan is predeceased by his brother-in-law James Metcalf.
