SALEM- Atty. Richard E. Daly, 91, beloved husband of the late Louise B. (McCarthy) Daly, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage, died peacefully Sunday, February 7, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Salem on December 22, 1924, he was the son of John F. Daly and Jennie (Smith) Daly. After attending St. Joseph's School in Salem, MA, he graduated from St. John's Prep. Later he graduated from both Boston College (1951) and Boston College Law School (1960), becoming a Double Eagle, a moniker that he was very proud of.
During WWII Richard served his country in the army tank corps based at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He sustained injuries and was honorably discharged as a disabled veteran.
For many years Richard worked for the Massachusetts Industrial Accident Board and retired as the Assistant Secretary, running the Board's operations as the chief administrator. He later became an Assistant Attorney General and chief of its worker's compensation section.
In 1973 Richard expanded his part-time private law practice into a very successful full time practice in Salem MA, maintaining his licensed law status for over fifty-five years. He was a member of the Salem, Essex County, and Massachusetts Bar Associations. Richard was also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.
During his lifetime Richard actively participated in many civic and charitable organizations. He was President of United Cerebral Palsy, The Holy Name Society, and the Boston College Alumni Association of the North Shore.
With his wife Louise he dedicated himself to raising 10 children and entertaining 25 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and a large extended family. He enjoyed vacations in Maine, cookouts, boating, the company of his pug, Oscar, and family reunions. He also relished BC football and held season tickets for over fifty years. His home was the center of continuous family activities, Christmas traditions, and holiday get-togethers.
Richard is survived by son Dennis F. and Joanne Daly of Salem, daughter Mary-Lou Daly of Salem, son Richard E. and Joyce Daly of Danvers, son Kevin T. and Maria Daly of Salem, daughter Kathleen T. and Michael Bonaiuto of Peabody, daughter Anne Marie and William Conners of Tewksbury, daughter Margaret and Daniel Crateau of Danvers, son Air Force Major Matthew J Daly of Shreveport, LA., and daughter-in-law Magda Daly of Peabody. He is predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Daly, who died in infancy, his son James M. Daly, and his brother, John F. Daly
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held from The O'Donnell Funeral Home 46 Washington Sq., (At Salem Common) Salem, Thursday, Feb. 11th, at 9:15 A.M. followed by his funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd., Salem at 10 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours, Wednesday, Feb. 10th from 4 to 8 P.M.
