Barbara Ann (Harrison) Newman

SALEM- Barbara Ann (Harrison) Newman, 85 of Salem, joined her late husband, Thomas Newman, in Heaven in the early morning hours of November 25th, 2021.

Barbara was a woman of tremendous love and compassion who shared her heart and radiant smile with all who crossed her path. She and her husband shared 59 years of marriage and raised four children. She was a proud grandmother to her eight grandchildren and even prouder great-grandmother to her nine great-grandchildren. Family and friends never once doubted Barbara’s love and support.

As a lifelong resident of Salem, MA, many within the community knew and felt Barbara’s love. She was a spirited member of Salem High School’s class of 1954 and organized the annual class reunion for 60+ years. She was also an integral part of the City of Salem’s Heritage Days Committee for many years. She was the founder of The Witches Brew for the Salem High football program and one of the founders of the PTO at Witchcraft Heights Elementary School.

Barbara and Tom owned and operated Newco Printing with their three sons for many years. Together, their business supported communities across the North Shore and no need was ever left unattended. But if Barbara wasn’t in the office or attending a committee meeting, she could be found on the sidelines, in the stands, or in the front row for her grandchildren’s games, competitions and performances.

Throughout her life, Barbara enjoyed her time near the ocean and within her community. She made frequent visits to Winter Island with Tom and her friends and local favorite restaurants for some of her favorite dishes. She was also a life-long parishioner of Ste. Anne’s Church. She was an avid knitter and Red Sox fan and never missed a Patriots game.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, her parents Alfred and Alma Harrison, and her brothers Alfred and Robert Harrison. She is survived by her four children Thomas Newman and his wife Maryann, Kenneth Newman and his wife Sharon, James Newman and Laurie Bertone and her husband Daniel; her siblings Joyce Corbett and her husband Tom and Richard Harrison and his wife Judy; her sister-in-law Gail Mezakowski and her brother-in-law Robert Sholds; and life-long friend Syliva Ywuc. She will continue to watch over her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Dr. Jeffrey Newman and his wife Maureen, and their children Cole, Emmett, James and Matthew, Shaina DeLorenzo and her husband Anthony, and their two children Ryan and Grace, Andrew Newman and his daughter Abigail, Chad Newman and his fiancé Kari Wilson, Jennifer Feener and her husband Dan, and their children Emma and Elise, Matthew Bertone, Nathan Bertone and Kevin Melo.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from O’Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 84 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) SALEM, on Wednesday, December 1st at 9 A.M. followed by her funeral Mass at Ste. Anne’s Church, Jefferson Ave., Salem, at 10 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours Tuesday, November 30th from 4 to 7 P.M.
