Benjamin Walter Gary

DANVERS - Mr. Benjamin Walter Gary, 90 of Danvers, beloved husband of Toby Sima (Freedman) Gary passed away peacefully on Friday, July 23, 2021 at the Kaplan Estates in Peabody with his loving family by his side.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Benjamin was the son of the late Benjamin W. Gary, Sr. and Annie May (Lafoon) Gary. Raised and educated in Richmond, Benjamin continued his education at North Carolina State University, Raleigh and earned his master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from The Harvard School of Design.

Benjamin’s excitement with and devotion to the landscaping industry was essential in every aspect of his life. In his early career, he taught design, plant materials and landscape construction at Harvard to ambitious students in his industry, giving back to the community that inspired him throughout his life. For the past 65 years, Ben was the president, owner and operator of the prestigious Landscape and Architecture Firm, the former Moriece & Gary of Cambridge, currently Marshall Gary of Danvers. A proud yet humble man, Ben was a President of the American Society of Landscape Architecture (ASLA) and was the 1st president of DEEP (Danvers Educational Enrichment Partnership).

Above all else, Ben loved to be home surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who went above and beyond to make sure they were well provided for. He will be fondly remembered for his kindness, gentlemanly nature and generosity to others and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. 

In addition to his wife Toby with whom he shared 41 years of marriage, Benjamin is survived by his children; Brian Gary and his wife Gayle, Melaney McWilliamson, Heather Gary and her husband Peter Grevatt, Erin Gary and his grandchildren, Nathaniel Grevatt, Siena Grevatt and Samara Carrion Gary. He was the brother of the late Richard Gary.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to attend Benjamin’s Celebration of Life which will be held in the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) Danvers on Thursday, August 5th. Attendees welcome as of 4 P.M. Memorial Service begins promptly at 5 P.M. Masks are required. All other services are private.
