D. Winifred Woodward Obituary

DANVERS - Mrs. D. Winifred (Plumstead) Woodward, 96, a long-time resident of Danvers and Middleton, died Sunday, April 21st, 2024 at Hawthorne Hill in Danvers.

Winnie was the wife of the late Frank E. Woodward. She was born in Lynn, daughter of the late Frank H. and Doris M. (Chisholm) Plumstead. She grew up in Swampscott, educated in Swampscott Schools and graduated from Swampscott High School, Class of 1945. During her senior year in High School, she worked as an assistant to the cost accountant, part-time, at the Boston machine Works Company, Central Sq., Lynn, where her short-hand teacher had placed her. She and Frank met at Swampscott High School and married in 1949. She worked for the Boston Machine Works, following graduation from high school, for 10 years full-time. She and her husband moved to Danvers in 1955; she left BMW and became secretary to the sales manager of the Unex Hearing Aid Manufacturing Company in Danvers. Frank was in banking and when he had the opportunity to become Vice President and Treasurer of the Orange Savings Bank in Orange, MA, they sold their home and moved to Orange in 1959. In 1963, they moved back to Danvers, as Frank became President of the Everett Savings Bank. Winnie always liked secretarial work; she became the secretary to the minister of the Northshore Unitarian Universalist Church in Danvers. She loved the work and worked for 3 different ministers over the years. She worked for the last minister of her tenure, (Rev. Ed Lynn), for 22 years and at the time of her retirement in 1993, she had devoted 30 years of service to the church.

Winnie belonged to two book clubs, The Danvers Literary Group, of which she was Chair person for several years and was also a member of the Fuller Pond, Middleton Book Group, Middleton. Winnie and Frank travelled and cruised extensively, but liked the US Virgin Island of St. Croix so much they bought a condo for vacation purposes there. She had been a resident of the Town home community of Fuller Pond Village, in Middleton for many years.

Winne and Frank had one daughter, Karen E. Woodward, who died instantly in a motor vehicle accident at the age of 48 in 2005. Winnie is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, her sister-in-law, Maryann Woodward of Swampscott and her good friend Tom Pessotti.
