Donald Burt Obituary

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Mr. Donald E. Burt, 90 of East Providence, RI, beloved husband of the late Norma (McPherson) Burt, died peacefully, June 3, 2020 at Tockwotton on the Water in East Providence, RI. 

Born in Portland, Maine on February 7th, 1930, he was the son of the late Everett and Harriet (Rice) Burt. He was raised and educated in Portland, Maine and attended The University of Maine, earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering. 

Don began his career as a Mechanical Engineer working at the United Shoe Machinery Corporation in Beverly, MA where he met his wife Norma.  Over the span of his 50-year career he held multiple mechanical engineering positions including Vice President of Engineering for the Reece Corporation in Waltham.  He also received several patents for his work.

Don was an avid golfer and woodworker. He liked to duck hunt and hand-crafted his own wooden duck decoys.  He had many hobbies that he enjoyed with stamp collecting, fly tying and gardening.  He also enjoyed fishing and hunting at Moosehead lake in Maine with his brother Bob.  One of his most coveted pastimes was his weekly card game with his friends from Ipswich which spanned over decades. 

In his post retirement years after the passing of his wife Norma, Don remarried, the late Marilyn Wilson and they spent 18 years enjoying time in Plymouth, MA and Venice FL together.

Don is survived by his three children, Susan O’Connell and her husband Joseph of Wilton CT, Sharon Orloff and her husband Stuart of West Newbury MA, and Steven Burt of Amesbury MA, 7 grandchildren, Matthew, Megan and Kaitlin O’Connell, Joseph and Michael Orloff and Adam and Amanda Burt and his brother Robert Burt of Sunapee, NH.

ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral Services were privately held. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (rte 62) Danvers.
