Dorothy J. (Prendergast) Ghika

BEVERLY - Mrs. Dorothy J. (Prendergast) Ghika, 92 of Beverly, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Anna Jacques hospital in Newburyport with her loving family by her side.

Born in Boston she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Collins) Prendergast. She was raised and educated in Boston and attended Catholic School from elementary through high school. Dorothy continued her education, graduating from Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School.

Dorothy began a career as an administrative assistant for Boston Gas where she worked for over 10 years. After being a stay-at-home mom, she worked as a home health aide on the Northshore for over 20 years.

A feisty, outgoing Irish woman with a huge heart, Dorothy loved sitting on her front porch and talking to the passersby on their way to the beach. The Beverly Senior Center was her go to place for many years. She thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of her many friends, and the many activities the Center sponsored. Being the only one with a car, she and her friends would pile in to go on many of the adventures with the Center, usually with a lot of hilarity involved. Dorothy loved dancing, was an avid reader, and attended many of the lectures at the Beverly Public Library. She was a no-nonsense woman and if she liked you, she liked you. You always knew where you stood with her. She taught each of her children, and many of their friends, to play cribbage so she would always have someone to play with. Dorothy loved her family especially her grandchildren and was happiest when surrounded by them. Dorothy will be fondly remembered as the epitome of her Irish heritage, she loved the green; she wore it, and she lived it. She will be deeply missed by her loving family and many friends, including special friends Eva and Elsa.

Surviving Dorothy is her daughter, Diane Ghika and her partner Michael Proulx of Chester, NH, and sons David Ghika of Beverly and Vincent “Vinnie” Ghika and his partner Karen Willis of Hampton, NH, her grandchildren, Sara Ghika of Littleton, CO, Nik Ghika of Sasebo, Japan, and Amber and Sydney Proulx of Chester, NH and multiple generations of nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service will be held in O’Donnell Cremations, Funerals, Celebrations 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) DANVERS on Thursday, March 30th, at 3 P.M. Visiting hours prior to the service from 1 to 3 P.M. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Dorothy’s memory to Beverly Council on Aging, 90 Colon St., Beverly, MA 01915, Attn.
