BEVERLY- Elaine (Newman) Whelihan 64 of Beverly, died October 2nd, 2013 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill surrounded by her family.
Born and raised in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Ervin C. and Eleanor (Viselli) Newman. She was educated in the Salem Public Schools and graduated from Salem High School in 1967. Elaine earned a Bachelors degree in English and Education from Salem State College in 1971. In 1972, she earned a Masters Degree in Library Science from Simmons College and later went on to receive a Masters Degree in Education/Administration and Media from Salem State.
Elaine was a school librarian for 35 years. She retired from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in 2007. She was also the librarian at the North Shore Regional Vocational High School, the Whitin Intermediate School in Uxbridge, and worked at the Beverly Public Library as the Young Adult Librarian. While teaching at Hamilton-Wenham, Elaine was also an Adjunct Associate Professor at Salem State College in the graduate division in the Library/Media Studies department where she taught for 19 years and also worked part-time in the evening at North Shore Community College as both an Instructor and a Reference Librarian.
She was a voracious reader and loved to dance. She was a member of the Massachusetts Teacher's Association-Retired, Massachusetts Retirees United, and the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts.
Elaine is survived by her sister, Ellen LaChance and her nephew Joshua Davis, both of Beverly and her niece, Rebekah Davis of Edgewater, NJ. She also leaves her beloved dog Jasmine, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from The O'Donnell Funeral Home 46 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) Salem, Saturday at 9:15 A.M. followed by her funeral Mass in St. James Church, Federal St., Salem at 10 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in North Beverly Cemetery, Beverly. Visiting hours Friday from 4 to 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elaine's memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston MA 02215-5450.
