Emma Marquis Obituary

BEVERLY - On Wednesday, August 26, 2020, Emma Marquis (née Thomas), wife of the late George Marquis and mother of six, passed away peacefully at her home from natural causes and in the presence of her family, age 90. She was a resident of Beverly for 64 years.

Emma was born on November 17, 1929 in Cambridge, Massachusetts to William Thomas, Sr. and Alice (Galvin) Thomas. She was the youngest of four children.  As a child, Emma spent much time in the Danbury, New Hampshire area. After graduating from the Cambridge Latin School, Emma earned a Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages from Boston University in 1951. During the 1950s, Emma was a teacher for Boston Public Schools. In 1956, Emma married George Marquis of Peabody, Mass. Later in her career, she began teaching again in Beverly and was an active member of her community for many years. Among Emma’s interests were international travel, classical music, and trying new restaurants. Emma greatly enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.

Emma is survived by five children, George Marquis of Cairo, Egypt, Margaret Marquis-Hemeon, her husband Ronald both of Essex, Mass., Alicia Sheridan, her husband Philip both of Peabody, Mass., William Marquis of Danvers, Mass, Robert Marquis, his wife Irina both of Norwalk, Conn., and eight grandchildren. 

Emma was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George, her daughter Clare, her father William, mother Alice, sister Alice, brother William, and brother Edward.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to attend Emma’s visiting hours in the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) Danvers on Sunday, August 30th from 2 to 6 P.M.
