SWAMPSCOTT – Mr. George W. Ryan, 84 of Swampscott, formerly of Salem passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at North Shore Medical Center in Salem.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Dr. James P. and Anna (Sands) Ryan. Raised and educated in Salem, he was a graduate of Salem High School class of 1953 and continued his education at Tufts University earning his bachelor’s degree in 1957.
A proud veteran, George served his country as a member of the United States Navy. Throughout his life, George remained active in supporting veterans, involving himself in many organizations where he was able to connect with others and create life-long friendships.
A hard and dedicated worker, George spent his professional career with IBM as a Sales Manager and held various positions within the company until the time of his retirement.
A respected mentor, George remained actively involved in his University fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, where he was an advisor to many. He looked forward to his Salem High School reunions and relished in his community involvements throughout the City of Salem. He was a loyal Boston sports fan and in his free time, George could be found relaxing and boating on Lake Winnipesaukee. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and dear friends.
George is survived by his daughter, Valerie Gass and her husband Daniel of Burlington, his sons; George Ryan Jr. and his wife Rox Ann Thompson of Arnold, Maryland and Sean Ryan of Nashua, NH, his 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, his longtime partner, Rose Welling of Swampscott and her son Tom Welling, and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his wife, Grace Valerie (Nichols) Ryan with whom he shared 48 years of marriage and his brother, Dr. James T. Ryan.
