Helen Dozois Obituary

SALEM - Mrs. Helen L. (Vogler) Dozois 96, of Salem, beloved wife of the late Norris W. Dozois, died Saturday, January 1st, 2022 at Salem Hospital with her family by her side.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Elisha and Helen (Pousland) Vogler. She was raised and educated in Salem.

As a young woman, Helen had been employed as a Buyer and Manager at the former Boston Leader Women’s Clothing store of Salem. Upon the start of her family, Helen focused her love and attention to raising her daughters. Later in life she started a specialty cake decorating business. She had a true talent for the sugar arts and was called upon by many families to help create beautiful confections for their celebratory events. She took great pride in expressing her artistic talents in this medium.

A lifelong resident of the City of Salem, she was an active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed volunteering for many of the church committees and organizations as well as teaching Sunday school. Helen also had a true passion for animals. She would hand knit blankets and donate them to the North East Animal Shelter in Salem to comfort animals in need. Her hobbies included oil painting, knitting, reading and playing bingo. A favorite weekly ritual for her was spending time with her daughters that included lunch dates and long drives through the countryside or strolls along the seaside Salem Willows Park and Dane Street Beach, Beverly. Above all else, she was happiest surrounded by those she loved.

Helen was truly devoted to her family. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren. You could see the pride and love she had for them on her face when in their presence. This was most evident at the recent weddings of two of her granddaughters. She was the true star of the dance floor at 95 years of age. She created a wonderful, loving family that has many memories to carry with them forever. Helen loved sharing her life stories with her daughters and grandchildren. One story she shared was of an evening at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston where she became a beauty pageant runner-up in the 1940's. She had many interesting stories from life, long ago. Her family will miss hearing Nana share those stories as they were the joys and highlights of her life.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Laurie Brooks and her husband, Richard of Westwood and Cindy Cronin and her husband, Jim of Georgetown. Her grandchildren include, Cassandra Kovacs (Robert), Amanda Caruso (Anthony), Brian Cronin and Samantha Brooks. She is also survived by a niece, Joan Dombrowski of Florida. She was the mother of the late infant Beth Helen Dozois and the sister of the late Charlie Vogler, Pauline Dion and Russel, Leonard and Margaret Vogler.
