SALEM – Mr. Herbert L. Mackey Jr. 92, of Salem, beloved husband of the late Florence (McInnis) Mackey, died Thursday, May 13th 2021 peacefully at home.
Born in Salem on November 16, 1928, he was the son of the late Herbert L. Sr. and Alice (Geary) Mackey. He was a graduate of Essex Agricultural School in 1948. An honorably discharged veteran, he served our country as a member of the United States Army. Herbert was the President of Thomas Mackey & Sons, Inc. of Salem. He was a long-time communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veraguas Council #76, both of Salem.
He enjoyed welding metal art and displaying his creations at his sculpture yard on Blaney Street in Salem. He was uniquely creative, had a great talent, and was amused by watching others enjoy his conceptions.
Herb was truly a family man first. He was immensely devoted to his wife. He was a beloved father to his daughters and son in law, and was adored by his grandchildren. Herb was also a cherished and loyal friend. These were his greatest joys. He will be greatly missed by many. His gifts to others were always in kind, quiet and from the heart.
His daughters, son in law, and his grandchildren are grateful for him setting a great example, working so hard, and loving us so much. His knowledge, sense of humor, and encouragement will be sorely missed. The good times and great memories will be forever in our hearts. Faith. Hope. Love.
Herb is survived by his daughters, Elaine Mackey of Salem and Kathy Locke and her husband, Andrew of Beverly, his grandchildren, Brianna Mackey and Ryan and Reagan Locke, his sisters Alice Johnson of Peabody, Celia Berlyn of AZ and many dear nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. He was the twin brother of the late Daniel Mackey and brother of the late Mary Nabozny and Edward and Charles T. Mackey.
