GLOUCESTER – Mr. Jason Michael Mathews, 40 of Gloucester passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 4, 2020 due to his long and tireless battle with addiction and depression.

Born in Gloucester, he was the son of Joseph Mathews and Karen (Lopes) Souza. Raised and educated in Gloucester, he was a graduate of Gloucester High School.

Jason had a life-long passion for baseball, starting in his youth; he played with the Angels, McDonalds and Gloucester High School. He loved being outdoors, enjoying fishing trips with his grandfather and ski trips to Loon Mountain with his dad and uncles. He had a great appetite for food, especially his grandmother’s famous meatballs. Most importantly, was Jason’s love for his family, especially his daughter Aubrey. He cherished the time and memories he made with her; she was truly his life. Jason leaves behind his love and beautiful smile that will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his daughter Aubrey and his parents, Karen Souza and Joseph Mathews, Jason is survived by his sister, Arianna Souza, step-mother; Lee Mathews, step-sister; Samantha Hartwell, maternal grandfather; Robert Lopes (Beverly), aunts; Yvonne Tarantino, Marion Poland (Dave) and Nicole Geanoulis (Jon), uncles; Marcellus Lee, Neil Mathews (Bridgette) and Thomas Mathews (Nadine), Godson; Mathew Hartwell, best friend; Michael Provencher, girlfriend; Jennifer Callahan, Godparents; Michael Stanton and Janet Stanton and many cousins. Jason was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Neil and Mary Mathews, maternal grandmother, Loretta Lopes and uncle, James Mathews.

ARRANGEMENTS: At the request of the family, all services are private. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) Danvers.
