SALEM – Mr. José Rafael Diaz, “El Mayimbe” 55, of Lynn, formerly of Salem, died unexpectedly, November 1st, 2023 at his home.
Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, he was the son of José A. Diaz and the late Angela R. (Toribio) Diaz. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School, class of 1988,
Professionally, Mr. Diaz began his professional career in the leather industry at Travel Leather in Peabody, where he worked for several years. He always loved to cook and also had been employed at several restaurants. He had an incredible work ethic and was a stellar employee at all the places he was associated with. He especially loved cooking for his daughters and his “Pernil” was one of the best. It was one of the ways in which he shared his love with them.
Music was a passion of José’s from a young age. He turned that passion into a career as a Disc Jockey “DJ”. He knew how to get the crowd hoping but really loved the slow jams and ballads the most.
A longtime resident of the City of Salem, José enjoyed playing dominos, watching movies and reading. Family was important to him. At every familial event, he took over the dance floor with great panache and flair. Salsa dancing the night away; always dressed to the nines. He was an avid reader and enjoyed spending his time at the library. He will be deeply missed and always remembered.
His daughters were his pride and joy. José always spoke about them and his eyes would light up when he mentioned their names. They were his motivation to keep moving forward. He loved them dearly. Even though he battled mental illness during his last years, he still had an optimistic outlook on life and was always smiling & laughing. He loved spending time with his family.
José is survived by his daughters, Arlene Diaz of Lynn and Shaila Diaz of New York, his father, José A. Diaz, his siblings, José A. Diaz, Yudelka Diaz, Primitivo A.
