SALEM - Mr. Leo J. Pierga 91, of Salem, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Wladyslaw “Walter” and Stefania “Stella” (Nowak) Pierga. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War.
Following his return from the service, Mr. Pierga had been employed as a Supermarket Produce Manager for several years before his retirement at the age of 47. He then embarked on his second career as a Handyman. He was well known for his expertise in many fields and never found a job he could not complete. His success was a direct result of is strong work ethic, his kindness to others and his honest, straight forward approach.
A lifelong resident of the City of Salem, Leo was a member of the V.F.W. Witch City Post # 1524, he enjoyed playing Bingo at the former St. Mary’s Italian Church in Salem and attending the various Polish Picnics and Fairs. Very independent, he loved fishing and taking the bus to Foxwoods which he did well into his 90’s. He was a loving brother, uncle, great uncle and cousin who will be fondly remembered for his support and generosity to his family.
Leo is survived by his nieces and nephews, Dorothy and Paul Ambrefe, Mary Ellen Doyon, Kathleen Conant, Julie Chirichello, Jennifer Crowe, Kimberly Bochynski, Patrick, Kristie and Kelly Rose Pierga, Carole Letarte and John Lefas, great nephews, Daniel Letarte and Jeffrey Dailey and many extended family. He was the brother of the late Regina Jackimowicz, Sophie Ambrefe, Boleslaus “Boley” Pierga, Frederick Pierga, Alice St. Pierre Bruda and Helen Lefas and uncle of the late Richard Pierga, Ronald St. Pierre and William Lefas and great uncle of the late Richard Dailey, Donna Wowk.
ARRANGMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Service which will be held graveside at St. Mary’s Cemetery, North St., Salem on Thursday, April 29th at 10 A.M.. All attendees must wear face masks and practice social distancing.
