CAMBRIDGE - Linda Fandel, 88, of Cambridge, MA passed away on February 14, 2021.
Linda was born on August 15th, 1932 to William and Thelma Fandel in Lincoln, IL. After graduating from East Peoria High School, she pursued a degree in nursing, completing her training in Chicago with a specialty in psychiatry. There she met a medical resident, Harold Nichols, whom she married in 1956. Harold and Linda had four children: Jeff (b. 1957), Sharon (b. 1958), Keith (b. 1959) and Susan (b. 1961). After completing his medical training, Harold served in the US Air Force; he and Linda were stationed in Germany, Colorado and Texas before settling in South Bend, IN after Harold completed his service. When her children were young, Linda was a full-time mom. As they entered high school or college Linda resumed her nursing career, first working at Elkhart Hospital in northern Indiana. Linda and Harold divorced in 1981, after which Linda moved to the Boston area and worked for the remainder of her career at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. She retired in 1997.
Throughout her life Linda was a dedicated amateur pianist, often attending music festivals and chamber-music workshops. All who knew her were aware of Linda’s deep love for music and her ability to care for others no matter who they were or what the circumstances. She will be remembered for her warm smile and sparkling eyes, her calm and loving presence, and her ability to make others feel special because she truly believed they were, from the patients in her care, to fellow nurses who cared for her, to everyone she met in her daily walks around Cambridge. Above all, she loved being a grandmother and took great joy in being a part of her five grandchildren’s lives. She will be deeply missed by her family, her friends, and the many people whose lives she enriched with her warmth and caring.
Linda was predeceased by her parents, William and Thelma, her brothers Donald and William, and her sisters Dorothy, Joyce and Caroline. She is survived by her children Jeff (Anne), Sharon (Michael), Keith (Judith) and Susan and her grandchildren Evan, Rose, Beth, Gabriel and Aaron.
