MARBLEHEAD – Mrs. Nancy A. Richard, died Saturday, May 2, 2020 at the Lafayette Nursing Home in Marblehead from complications of the Covid 19 Virus. She was 83 years old. She is survived by two sons, Jim Richard of Salem and Ted Richard of Beverly Farms, two daughters, Debbie Richard of Danvers and Mary Beth Kennedy of Hollis, NH. She also leaves 7 grandchildren, Patrick, Meghan and Kerry Kennedy and Hilary, Ryan, Patrick and James Richard. She has one great grandson, Dylan Ferris.
Nancy was born and raised in Shinnston, West Virginia the daughter of Earl and Mary Nutter, who managed the local A & P Grocery and taught elementary school, respectively. Nancy married and started a family after graduating high school and gave birth to her first three children at 3 different Air Force bases before moving to Salem with her three children and husband Raymond Richard. In 1960 Nancy suffered a severe stroke while giving birth to her youngest child, Debbie and began a hard but successful recovery for several months before she could return home and be a fantastic mom to her beloved children.
Nancy was an excellent home maker and an especially great cook for her family, all the while working part time at Empire Clothing Company in Salem to help with the family finances and to keep her children well dressed. Her dinners were mouth wateringly good and were usually topped off with a home-made pie or cake for dessert. For recreation, she loved her bowling league at Candlepin Lanes. Later when the children were grown, she became a book keeper at Jeffrey Brothers Furniture in Salem.
As Nancy aged, she faced the challenge of dementia, but through it all showed a fighting spirit and could be seen on her walker going up and down the corridors of the Brook House and then the Lafayette Nursing Home with boundless energy. The Richard Family owes a deep debt of gratitude to both those institutions for their wonderful care.
Her family will truly miss her.
