DANVERS – Mrs. Nancy (Spear) Usher, 85, of Danvers, beloved wife of the late Frederic L. Usher Sr., died peacefully, Thursday, January 4th, 2024 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
Born in Malden to the late George and Elizabeth (York) Spear on March 13th, 1938. She attended public schools mostly in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School as a member of the class of 1956. Nancy was voted most athletic girl in her class and for her athletic prowess was inducted into the Melrose High School Athletic Hall of Fame. She continued her education graduating from Gorham Teachers College in Maine in 1960, having majored in English. A lifelong learner, she attended Boston University from 1964 until 1968 studying guidance and counseling and did additional studies at Salem State College and Lincoln Filene Center at Tufts University.
Upon graduation from college, Mrs. Usher returned to Melrose to teach in the public schools. She spent three years teaching fifth grade and when an opening in the English Department occurred, she moved to the junior high school and taught seventh and eighth grade English for the next 33 years until the time of her retirement. In addition to her teaching duties, Nancy coached Melrose High School Freshman Girls Basketball from 1973 until 1978. She was also a member of the Melrose High School Athletic Hall of Fame Board of Directors.
Nancy served as an officer in the United States Naval Reserves from 1969 until 1975.
A long-time resident of the town of Danvers, Nancy was an active member of the Danvers Council on Aging, where she led a literature class for over 13 years. She spent many years as a volunteer for Care Dimensions Hospice. She also enjoyed spending her time golfing and was a voracious reader. Nancy was outgoing and made friends easily. She always would open her home or heart to those in need. With her outgoing and kind nature, she endeared herself to many. She had a deep love of animals, especially her feline companions Rusty and her dear beloved Maggie who was by her side for 18 years.
Nancy was predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Captain Frederic Usher, US Navy (ret), her parents, her five siblings and two stepsons, Frederic Usher Jr. and Douglas Usher. Other step children include Kathleen Beason and Charles Usher and her step-daughter-in-law, Beverly Shorter. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, among them Nancy Cameron Rossi, Bruce Cameron and Ross McCullough who looked after her with great care. She is also survived by many great and great, great nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service will be held at O’Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 167 Maple St., (rte 62) DANVERS, Thursday, Jan. 11th at 11 A.M. Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Visiting hours Wednesday, Jan. 10th from 3 to 6 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Melrose High School Scholarship Fund in memory of Nancy Spear Usher mhsfund.org or to the Danvers High School Scholarship in memory of Frederic L.
