SALEM - Mr. Patrick Joseph Harrington, 79, of Salem, died unexpectedly, August 14th, 2020 at his home.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Paul P and Beatrice (Barbeau) Harrington. His birth mother, Beatrice, died when Patrick was 4 years old and he was raised by Mary K. (Cully) Harrington, his father's second wife. He was educated in Salem and was a graduate of St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers. He continued his education graduating from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Professionally, Mr. Harrington was a Merchant Marine - Ships Officer and Engineer, until the time of his retirement. He truly enjoyed his time spent out to Sea, visiting ports throughout the world.
A longtime resident of the City of Salem, Patrick lived on Salem Common for over 30 years, not far from his boyhood home. He was well known throughout Salem as an outgoing gentleman always willing to speak with a stranger, who quickly became a new friend. He was a history buff and voracious reader, devouring the knowledge from his daily reading of the New York Times or a Maritime History book. He enjoyed keeping up with current events via his favorite radio programs and could often be found walking throughout the city of Salem and was a favorite at many of the local food and beverage establishments. As a young boy he spent summers on the Common participating in the drum and bugle corps. Patrick was very proud of his family’s heritage and often regaled in stories of their many accomplishments.
Patrick is survived by his son, Christopher Harrington and his wife, Ginger of Sherman, CT and many Harrington cousins and extended family.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service which will be held, graveside, at St. Mary's Cemetery, North St., Salem, Saturday, August 7th at 11 A.M.
