HOLLY SPRINGS, NORTH CAROLINA - Mr. Peter Joseph Meaney, 83, of Holly Springs, NC, formerly of Salem, MA, loving husband of Phyllis T. (Levesque) Meaney, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 5th, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Salem, Peter was the son of the late John J. and Katherine M. (Morris) Meaney. He received his education at St. Mary's School in Lynn and was a member of their 1958 graduating class. While working for the New England Telephone Company, Peter earned an Associate Degree from North Shore Community College.
Growing up in the Bridge Street area of Salem, the friends and experiences that shaped him were always carried close to his heart. It was a source of pride to have grown up there and he had many fond memories of the Ward II Social Club, playing fast-pitch softball and spending time with his life-long “brothers.”
Peter spent his entire career as a Cable Technician grinding away for New England’s large telephone companies. Though his unrequited dream was to be a history teacher, Peter’s greatest role was caring for and guiding his family – first his sons, then his six grandchildren. As a husband, parent and grandparent, he was devoted to his family.
Along with his wife Phyllis of 56 years, Peter was a wonderful example to his sons, his daughters-in-law and their families. Whether it be an athletic event, a play, music recital or a Feis, he was ever present for his children and grandchildren. One of the most admirable things about Peter was his indefatigable loyalty to his grandchildren and his willingness to embrace and encourage whatever their interests might be. Whatever their activity, he always made the effort, traveling quite often, to witness his grandkids “doing their thing.” He cultivated quite a bond with all of them. They will miss him dearly.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Richard. In addition to his wife Phyllis, Peter is survived by his grateful sons: John and his wife Catherine of Charlottesville, VA; Scott and his wife Tamara of Holly Springs, NC; and his grandchildren: Rebecca, Jack, Grace, Colin, Abigail and Emma. In addition to his immediate family, he leaves numerous and cherished extended family and friends.
