TOPSFIELD - Mr. Raymond Justus Cushing 90, of Topsfield, beloved husband of the late Lorna Katherine (Moon) Cushing, passed peacefully on Thursday, August 27th, 2015.

Born July 26, 1925, in Kansas City, Missouri, he was the son of the late Raymond Joseph and Metta Elizabeth (Justus) Cushing. He was raised and educated in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated from Westport High School. He was inducted into the Army shortly after his 18th birthday and served 18 months in Europe with the 79th Infantry Division. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1949. He later earned his Master's Degree from Northeastern University.

Mr. Cushing was employed with the General Electric Company in Lynn for 15 years and then worked for the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, which later became Draper Laboratory, for 25 years, retiring in 1990. There he worked on gyroscopes for the inertial guidance systems of the Apollo spacecraft and the Trident II missile.

Ray moved his large family to Topsfield in 1962 and was a long time active member of St. Rose of Lima Church. Ray served his St. Rose church family in countless ways. He was on the parish council, as a Eucharistic minister, Lector, and a devoted alter server at daily mass and funerals. He was a founding member of the church's weekly prayer group. He was also a volunteer driver for the Council on Aging and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He enjoyed lively conversation, meeting friends at the Daybreak Café, walks on the beach, and good books. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed.

Ray is survived by many family members whose photos covered his refrigerator and were placed on every piece of furniture in his home. His children include Kathleen Panneton, and her daughter Brianne; Christopher Cushing and his wife Marcia; David Cushing and his wife Rachel; Donna Cushing, her husband Brian King and their daughter Lydia; Lisa Hackett, her husband Don, their son Ryan, their daughter Renee Kane, her husband Tim and their four boys Ethan, Jonah, Benjamin and Jameson; Dan Cushing, his wife Yuki and their son Miki; Terry Mooney, her husband Bill and their children Meredith, Kevin and Erin; Jean Camire and her husband Tim. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Virginia Cushing and Marie Moon, brother-in-law Ronald Moon, and eight nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William Edward Cushing and Robert Eugene Cushing, and his wife Mary, all of Kansas City.

As he faced his final days, his body weakened but he never lost his good humor. In that spirit we would like to share a few cherished memories. Lessons learned from Dad: - Say the rosary while stuck in traffic. - It's OK to put an ice cube in a glass of white wine. - Being on time means showing up 15 minutes early. - Give money to charities that help the poor. Believe they will do the right thing with your money. - A "Sunday drive" should always include ice cream.
