MIDDLETON – Mr. Richard Paul “Dick” Carter, 84 of Middleton, formerly of Salem, loving husband of Beverly A. (MacDonald) Carter, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by his family.
Born in Salem, Dick was the son of the late Elliott and Dorothy M. (Langlois) Carter. He received his education at St. Mary’s School in Lynn and was a proud member of their 1958 graduating class. Throughout his time at St. Mary’s, Dick was actively involved in athletics, including football for the entirety of his high school career, basketball and was a founding member of the school’s golf team originating in 1956. Dick engaged in his school community to benefit the many members of his class, in doing so, he was voted his class president during both his sophomore and junior years and served as his class vice president during his senior year. Through his constant hard work and dedication back into the St. Mary’s community, Dick was elected in the St. Mary’s Hall of Fame in 2019.
An honorable veteran, Dick proudly served 6 years in the United States Marine Corps; four of them during active duty. A proud veteran through and through, Dick was grateful to be awarded the “Dress Blues Award” as an outstanding Marine in his platoon.
Dick continued his education following his discharge from the military, receiving his BSBA degree from Salem State University with a minor in Economics and his masters in Administration and Supervision from Suffolk University. With his experience and drive to teach and encourage others, Dick embarked on a lengthy career as a banker and educator.
Dick entered the field of banking in 1963, as a management trainee and rose to lending division head Senior Vice President, in a career that spanned for over forty-three years. He worked for a number of Savings Banks in the State of Massachusetts and worked closely with the Massachusetts Bankers Association in shaping techniques and modifying both residential and commercial real estate lending. Professionally, Dick gave back in education, teaching Principles of Marketing and Principles of Management at both Newbury College and North Shore Community College in their evening division for 12 years. He actively served as the DECA coordinator for Salem High School’s academic years in 1979 – 1981. With a passion to stay busy, following his retirement in 2006 from full-time employment, Dick started a consulting business and worked for himself as a bank consultant.
Through his many professional connections, Dick involved himself in numerous organizations, serving on many boards and committees, giving back to organizations through his hard work and dedication. He proudly was involved with the North Shore Catholic Charities, Kiwanis Club in Salem, The Dedham Rotary Club where he received recognition for his outstanding service to Rotary International by being awarded the Paul Harris award twice and the “Service Above Self” award, the Peabody Chamber of Commerce and the Northeast Development Corporation. He was particularly proud of his credibility and recognition as a guest lecturer in the economics department at Salem State University and proudly was involved in Mayor Menino’s Boston Habitat for Humanity working closely with two social service agencies, along with the City of Boston to achieve the goal of bringing funds to the Blue Hills area of Boston.
Dick was a true gentleman, working hard for his family whom he cherished above all else. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife Beverly, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage, Dick is survived by his children; Robert Carter of Orlando, FL, Janice Fischer and her husband, Michael of Wilmington, Christopher Carter of Tampa, FL and Tracy Angeramo and her husband, David of Salem; his grandchildren, Ryan, Alex, Allie and Eric Fischer, Rachel and Matthew Carter and Nicholas and Jillian Angeramo; his nieces and nephews, Susan Langley, Robert Carter, Carolyn Townsend and Michael Carter. He was the brother of the late Robert “Bob” Carter and uncle of the late, Deborah Morris.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to attend Richard’s funeral which will be held from O’Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) DANVERS on Saturday, September 2nd at 9 A.M. followed by his funeral Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church, 8 S. Common St., Lynn on Saturday, September 2nd at 10 A.M. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem to follow. Visiting hours on Friday, September 1st from 4 to7 P.M.
