Richard V. Ellery, Jr.

DANVERS – Mr. Richard V. Ellery, Jr., 84, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 19th, 2023 at Beverly Hospital. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Richard V. Sr, and Marion (Hanlon) Ellery. He was the beloved husband of Darla A. (Stevens) Ellery with whom he celebrated 63 years of marriage.

Raised and educated in Danvers, Richard attended Danvers public schools where he met the love of his life, Darla, in the 8th grade. He later went on to graduate from Vermont Academy, class of 1958, and attended Colby College in Maine where he and Darla started their family.

Richard was a salesman, retiring from Yankee Fireplace, Grill, and Patio several years ago. He loved the outdoors, had quite a green thumb, and loved spending time in his garden with his dogs. Richard took pride in a bountiful harvest and loved passing along his life knowledge to his children and grandchildren. He excelled in athletics at Vermont Academy and later was a coach for the Danvers Youth Hockey program for several years. His love of sports is something he would also pass on to his children and grandchildren and he could almost always be found in the stands for somebody’s game.

Family was everything to Richard, and he and Darla were blessed later in life with 7 grandchildren. The cottage in Cutler, Maine, was their second home where they enjoyed countless summers, epic water fights, and endless memories. A racecar fan, model car and ship builder, avid reader, wild bird watcher, dog lover, and family man, Richard wore many hats.

In addition to his beloved wife, Darla Ellery, Richard is survived by his 3 daughters; Jennifer Colby and her husband Richard of Newburyport, Elisabeth Anderson and her husband George of Danvers, and Sarah Ellery of Danvers, along with his 7 grandchildren; Patrick Colby, Daniel Colby, Benjamin Colby, Kevin Anderson and his wife Jacqueline, Thomas Anderson, Brian Perham, and Hannah Perham, and his beloved black lab, Bentley.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to attend Richard’s funeral service which will be held at O’Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) DANVERS on Friday, November 3rd at 4 P.M with visiting hours held prior to his service from 2 to 4 P.M.
