SALEM - Mr. Richard L. Gentile, 84, of Salem, beloved husband of Rose (Garabedian) Gentile, passed away on Monday, December 14, 2020 in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Louis and Ida Gentile. He was raised and educated in Salem, attending St. James Grammar School and was a graduate of Salem High School Class of 1954.
An honorably discharged veteran, Richard proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army.
Following his discharge from the service, Dick went to work for H.P. Hoods Milk Company of Salem. Possessing an entrepreneurial spirit, it didn’t take Dick long to realize, that there was more out there for him. He left the milk company and attended Barber School an opened his own shop at Tulley Square and Nelson’s Corner. Having a strong work ethic and a drive to succeed, Dick bought the Sports Haven Bar on Boston St., in Salem where he regaled his clients and friends alike with stories and enjoyed the camaraderie of those he served. Later, along with his wife Rose, by his side, they became the proprietors of Highland Liquor Mart in Salem. They worked side by side for 30 years building a business that became more of social club with customers and friends stopping by often just to hear one of the Dick’s great tales, always leaving the store with a smile.
A wonderful husband and loving dad, he went to work every day to provide for his family. He loved working alongside his wife and was most proud of his daughter and her many accomplishments. He enjoyed a good game of golf and will be deeply missed by his loving family, many friends and acquaintances.
Surviving Richard in addition to his wife Rose with whom he shared 55 years of marriage is his daughter, Karen Gentile of Salem. He was also the brother of the late William Gentile and Alfred Gentile.
