DANVERS – Richard “Rick” Alan Hoel, 69, died on Friday, August 25th, 2023, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House. Born April 13, 1954, at the Navy Hospital in South Weymouth, MA, Richard was the son of Captain Robert Hoel and Lorraine Faye. Rick was the loving husband of Sarah “Sally” Hoel (née Bolton), his wife of 45 years.
Raised in Duxbury, MA, Rick traveled extensively throughout his life and lived in Toronto, Ontario, Columbus, OH, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, New Orleans, LA, Salt Lake City, UT, Philadelphia, PA, Charlotte, NC, Colorado Springs, CO, Chicago, IL, San Diego, CA, Scottsdale, AZ, Memphis, TN, Cumming, GA, and Danvers, MA.
Rick was an accomplished chef who worked under chef, Jean Charles Berruet at the Chanticleer on Nantucket, as well as The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach from 1972 to 1974. He also held positions as a chef at the Ritz Carlton in Boston and the Bayerischerhof Hotel in Munich, Germany.
In 1979, Rick graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Administration, magna cum laude.
Rick worked for a combined 50 years of service in the hospitality industry, where he oversaw and took part in the opening of countless hotels across the country. In 1981, Rick assisted in the curation of the food and beverage services, menu, and wine list at The Explorer’s Club, a restaurant at the PGA Sheraton Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, which won awards for the quality of its extensive international wine list and the ingenuity of its design. For 17 years, Rick worked for Pyramid Hotel Group, rising to the position of VP of procurement.
Rick was a lifelong adventurer; he loved camping and road-trips with his family and with his friends. In his youth, he hitchhiked across Europe and the US—throughout the entirety of his life he visited 49 states.
Rick is survived by his wife, Sally, his two sons; Christopher Hoel (and wife, Victoria Blake), and Jonathan Hoel; as well as his siblings; Pamela Corcoran, Peter Fagley, Paul Fagley, Randall Hoel, Rodney Hoel, and Betsey Norland.
