Robert Paul Obituary

SALEM – Mr. Robert John Paul 85, of Salem, beloved husband of Ann Dorothy (McGroarty) Paul, died peacefully January 15th, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Gloucester, he was the son of William and Helen (McLean) Anderson. He was raised and educated in Gloucester and was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1953.

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. Robert enlisted following high school graduation devoting three years of service to his country. Following his tour, he attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

A week after graduating from UMass, Bob was hired by Raytheon Company where he worked for more than 30 years as an Electrical Engineer. He was key in the Patriot Defense program, and traveled extensively for design and training to El Paso and Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War.

Upon his retirement from Raytheon, Bob began his second career, as an Educator, teaching Computers at the South School in Peabody. More recently, he had been associated with Home Depot in Danvers until the time of his illness. Bob’s affable nature endeared him to many.

A long-time resident of the City of Salem, Bob was a member of the Lafayette Club in Salem where he joined with the Lafayette Golf League and Lafayette Candlepin Bowling League. He was an avid golfer and continued to play in the Raytheon Golf League after retirement where he made many lifelong friends.

Bob and Ann loved to travel and explored all over the US and especially enjoyed their 40-year annual tradition of spending time together as a complete family on Martha’s Vineyard. They relished many trips to Long Boat Key in Florida with cousin Barbara Kostan. They enjoyed fun trips to the casinos with friends and family, where Bob loved to try his luck at poker. Yet Bob was happiest surrounded by family and friends; from their summer lunches at Winter Island in Salem, to back yard cook outs and holiday gatherings, he was happiest encircled by his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ann Dorothy (McGroarty) Paul of Salem, his daughters, Nancy Dullea of Salem and Jennifer Kelley and her husband, Wayne, of Danvers, his daughter-in-law, Mary Paul of Salem, his grandchildren, Nicholas and Ryan Dullea, Timothy and Erin Paul, and Brandon and Zachary Kelley, and extended family and many friends. He was the loving father of the late Michael Robert Paul.
