MIDDLETON - Mr. Robert Neil Porteous 89, of Middleton, beloved husband of Elaine Helen (Dobson) Porteous, died Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Grosvenor Park Nursing Home in Salem. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Henry and Gladys Mae (Pynn) Porteous. He was raised and educated in Lynn and was a graduate of Boston University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. He continued his education at Northeastern, Harvard, MIT and Merrimack College as a life long learner. An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Porteous had been employed in the Management Department with the General Electric Company where he had spent 3 years with the company in Australia and several years at their River works Plant in Lynn until the time of his retirement.

A long-time resident of the Town of Middleton, Bob loved the Town of Middleton and donated his time and expertise to better his home town. He was a member and former chair of the Town of Middleton Finance Committee and was a member of the Solid Waste Committee. Active in civic and social circles, he had attended Grace Chapel in Lexington. Robert was an active and outstanding Mason and was a member of the Mount Carmel Lodge A.F. & A.M for 50 years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who was devoted to his wife and family. He will be greatly missed. Bob's gift was his music, he still has the baby grand piano his parents bought him in 1938. He played piano, organ and accordion. He played piano and organ for 20 years at the church of the Nazarene in Danvers. He passed that gift of music to his children. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Elaine Helen (Dobson) Porteous of Middleton, his daughters Karen E. Porteous of North Dakota, Julie L. Dunn of Washington, his sons Dana H. Porteous of California and Dean R. Porteous of Beverly, his 9 grandchildren, Stephanie, Eric, Trevor Dunn, Kaleb, Kaitlyn, Kallai and Kadeesh Griepp, Camille and Cameron Porteous, his great grandchildren, Jaxon, Derick, Liam and Darcy and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Barbara Brown and Phyllis Ashley.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held in the Middleton Congregational Church, Maple St., Middleton on Friday January 5th at 11 A.M.. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Oakdale Cemetery, Middleton is private. Visiting hours in the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (rte. 62) Danvers, Wednesday, January 3rd from 4 to 7 P.M.. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Robert's memory to the Middleton Congregational Church, 66 Maple St., Middleton, Ma 01949.
