IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Adrian John
Howorth
November 30, 1946 – May 25, 2023
LYNN, MA & WATFORD, UK – Mr. Adrian John Howorth 76, of Lynn, Massachusetts, USA and Watford, UK, beloved husband of Rita (Fitzsimmons) Grainge, died peacefully, Thursday, May 25th, 2023 at his home.
Born in Bolton, United Kingdom, he was the son of the late Alan and Florence (Waller) Howorth. He was raised and educated in Bolton, England and attended Church Road primary school and Smithills Grammar School in Bolton, UK. He continued his education at The University of Sheffield, UK, earning his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
Mr. Howorth was a well-respected and accomplished civil and water engineer. He began his career in civil engineering as the designer of many roads, freeways and bridges, much of which is still in use today. He transitioned into water engineering and worked in association with the Anglian Water Authority, UK. He was associated with Wimpey Laboratories of London, England for many years and specialized in bore hole drilling. His expertise in this realm of engineering brought him to Africa, South America, the Middle East and throughout the British Isles. His diligence and intellect were sought after throughout the engineering world. He truly loved his professional calling and often showed his work to family and friends with great pride.
With his vast experience and expertise in water engineering he was lured away into the insurance claims Industry. During this time of his professional career, he was summoned to some of the most opulent homes in London's most prestigious neighborhoods to handle insurance claims. As much as he enjoyed his work, he reveled in creating friendships with his clients.
An active and outstanding Mason, both here and in the UK, Mr. Howorth was a member of Essex Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Salem and Philanthropic Lodge of Marblehead, places where he made many friends. He lived a life by the masonic creed and it never led him astray. The common bond of brotherhood was at the heart to who Adrian was. In the UK, he was initiated in St. Wilfred Lodge (Northamptonshire & Huntingdonshire) in 1982 and over the years joined a number of Craft Lodges, Royal Arch Chapters and other masonic orders in London, Middlesex and Dorset. A truly dedicated and active mason, his many masonic endeavours were recognised when he was awarded Grand Rank in both the United Grand Lodge of England (2005) and Supreme Grand Chapter (2009). A committed mason to the end, he was particularly involved in charitable matters where he held the office of Provincial Grand Charity Steward with the Provincial Grand Chapter of Middlesex for some 10 years and was Chairman of The Masonic Province of Middlesex Charitable Trust from 2011 until the time of his death. In recent years, Adrian really relished being a dual nation mason & seeing both the similarities & the differences between the US & British masonic life.
A love story for the ages truly describes Adrian and Rita's relationship. Highschool sweethearts, life in the 1960s forged separate paths yet they would be reunited 25 years later when they were brought together by a mutual high school friend. Adrian, in Watford, called Rita, in Texas, one afternoon and a life together was formed. Over the next 27 years they enjoyed every moment together both in the USA and the UK, travelling and joining their families as one. They were truly meant to be.
Adrian loved sport, from football (soccer) to cricket, tennis, golf and even baseball. He was a passionate Boston Red Sox fan. He enjoyed spending his time rooting for his favorite football club, Bolton Wanderers and watching the English Premier & lower Leagues.
Adrian is survived by his wife, Rita (Fitzsimmons) Grainge, his daughter, Sarah King and her husband, Graeme of Twickenham, UK, his grandchildren, Alex, Lottie, Erin, Michael, David and Jonathan, Rita's stepchildren, Luke Grainge and his wife, Susan of Houston, TX and Martha Planten of Phoenix, AZ, nieces and nephews and many brother masons and friends.
