August 21, 1932 – July 27, 2024
FREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE – Mr. Alfred William Michalowski 91, of Fremont, NH, formerly a long-time resident of Beverly, beloved husband of the late Loretta A. (Young) Michalowski, died unexpectedly, Saturday, July 27th, 2024 at the Rockingham County Nursing & Rehab. He died a few weeks ahead of his 92nd birthday, a joyous milestone he was anticipating.
Born in Salem on Derby St., he was the son of the late Frank J. and Mary J. (Sowinski) Michalowski. He was raised and educated in Salem, attended the former St. John the Baptist Polish grammar School and Salem High School. A great athlete from a young age, he excelled playing first base with the St. Joseph's Club and basketball for the House of Seven Gables Teams. He was also active in scouting, as a member of the 555 Flying Cloud Pack at the Gables. He enjoyed his time and friendships made in Drum Corps with the PLAV Post #55 and later with the Clippers of Salem.
An honorably discharged veteran he served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean War. During his service to his country, he served on the Sub tender U.S.S. Orion AS-18 and on the Battleship U.S.S. New Jersey BB-62. He was extremely proud of his military service and a member of the American Legion and the U.S.S. New Jersey Vet. Inc.
Mr. Michalowski had a long and successful career with the General Electric Company at the Rivers Works plant. He was a graduate of the GE Apprenticeship Program and worked in the Medium Steam Turbine Division for 40 years from 1952 until the time of his retirement in 1992. He was a Senior Design Draftsman for the first 20 years of his career, followed as Supervisor of the Turbine Controls Drafting Operation until the time of his retirement. He even married his Bosses secretary, Loretta, who was the love of his life; together making a loving family.
Al relished time spent in the out of doors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed spending time at his camps in northern Maine and in New York on Lake Champlain. A firearm enthusiast, Al was an annual member of the N.R.A. and Past President (1966) and life member of the Danvers Fish and Game Club. His Catholic faith was an important part of his foundation. He was a long-time member of the former St. Alphonsus Church in Danvers and was a lector of over 33 years. Above all else, Al's devotion was to his family. He was a loving husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa who will be deeply missed.
Alfred is survived by his daughters, Janet Deleskey of Fremont, NH, Susan Shalkoski and her husband Thomas Jr of Danvers and Karen Johnson and her husband Craig of Hampton Falls, NH, his grandchildren, Jessica L. Deleskey of Austin, TX, Matthew and Christopher Shalkoski both of Danvers, his great grandson, Elijah Mercury Westbrook, his sister-in-law, Dorothy "Dolly" Michalowski of Salem and several nieces and nephews including Dr. Daniel Yutronich with whom he had a special relationship. He was the brother of the late Claudia LaPointe and Richard Michalowski.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held from O'Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 84 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) SALEM, Friday, August 2nd at 9 A.M. followed by his funeral Mass at St. John Paul II Shrine of Divine Mercy, St. Peter St., Salem at 10 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours Thursday, Aug. 1st from 4 to 7 P.M.
