EAST BOSTON - Amato Biancaniello, 84, of East Boston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on November 16, 1941, in Nusco, Italy, Amato carried a deep pride in his Italian heritage throughout his life. He served in the Italian military and worked as a truck driver in Italy before beginning a new chapter of his life in America.
In 1965, Amato married his beloved wife, Maria, beginning a journey together that would span 61 years of marriage. In 1981, they left their homeland and came to the United States, eventually making East Boston their home. Together, they built a life centered around family, hard work, and the Italian traditions they held dear.
Amato was a hardworking man in every sense of the word. After arriving in America, he worked cutting meat at a local deli and took on various jobs alongside a close friend. He believed in the value of an honest day’s work and continued working throughout nearly his entire life, right up until his final days. His determination, tireless work ethic, and unmistakably stubborn nature were qualities that defined him and will always be remembered by those who knew him.
When he wasn’t working, Amato could often be found tending to his beloved garden, making homemade wine in his basement, or carrying on the traditions he brought with him from Italy. Among the most cherished of those traditions was the annual summer ritual of jarring tomatoes with his family. What might have seemed like an ordinary task became a treasured family gathering, filled with hard work, togetherness, and memories that will be passed down for generations. From the vegetables he grew to the wine he made, Amato took pride in doing things with his own two hands, preserving not only the fruits of his labor but also a piece of his Italian heritage.
Affectionately known as “Nonno,” “Mattucho,” “Panzone,” and “Matoo,” Amato was a man whose larger-than-life personality and stubborn determination made him unforgettable. Each nickname reflected the affection and special memories shared with those closest to him.
Amato was the beloved husband of Maria Biancaniello and devoted father of Cinzia Biancaniello and her husband, James Dykes, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, and Luciano Biancaniello and his wife, April, of Derry, New Hampshire.
He was the proud grandfather of Michael Perkins and his son Charlie, Amato’s cherished great-grandson; John Biancaniello and his wife, Pam; Andrew Biancaniello; Lia Biancaniello; and Shane Stone.
Amato’s journey from the small Italian town of Nusco to his life in Massachusetts was one of determination, sacrifice, and devotion to his family. Though he made America his home, his Italian roots remained an inseparable part of who he was. The traditions he carried across the ocean became the traditions his family will carry forward.
Amato leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a family who loved him dearly, and a legacy built through hard work, perseverance, and the simple but meaningful moments spent together. His presence will be missed in the garden, in the basement where he made his wine, and around the table where his family gathered, but the love and traditions he shared will remain.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of his family.
