IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barbara (Kelley)
Locke
June 27, 1959 – September 1, 2022
WENHAM - Barbara Kelley Locke, 63, of Wenham, died after a brief illness on September 1st, 2022.
Born in Boston on June 27, 1959, Barbara was one of four children born to Paul and Nancy (Bracken) Kelley, who eventually settled in Andover, MA. Barbara attended Regis College, majoring in history, where she graduated cum laude. After graduation, she worked for many years at Sperry Topsider before meeting her husband, Peter. After their wedding, Barbara traveled with her husband to Italy and then Puerto Rico where she immersed herself in the culture, started a family, and made many lifelong friends along the way.
Returning from their travels, the family settled in Wenham, MA where Barbara spent 30 years raising her two children, Oliver and Margaret ("Daisy"). It was during this time that Daisy was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor. While aggressive treatment drove the cancer into remission, it left Daisy with significant physical and developmental challenges. This experience had a profound impact on the entire family and Barbara spent the rest of her life supporting Oliver and caring and advocating for Daisy.
In 1997, to honor Daisy and all those suffering from cancer, Barbara and Peter created Team Daisy to raise funds for research and treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Thanks to the generous support and participation of so many, Team Daisy's Pan Mass Challenge fundraising efforts have exceeded $4.5M to date.
Barbara also had many interests and was an active volunteer in her community. She had a great appreciation of history and its importance to Wenham, particularly the mission of the Wenham Village Improvement Society, its Tea House and playground, where she served as playground director and WVIS President. Barbara was also a longtime member of both the Wenham Historic District Commission and the Community Preservation Committee.
Barbara was an avid reader with particular interest in social issues affecting the poor, disadvantaged, and disabled and strongly believed in equal rights for all. She enjoyed skiing, traveling, and was an award-winning saleswoman at Clarus Glass Boards and most recently Skyline Design of Chicago. Above all, she was a tireless and loving mother to her children, a wonderful and cherished companion to her husband and a dear and treasured friend to many.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Peter, son, Oliver, and daughter, Daisy, of Wenham and her extended family and dear friends. She was loved deeply and will be greatly missed.
