BEVERLY - Mr. Barrie Larwood Henry Glover, 90 of Beverly, devoted husband of the late Jeanie Dale (Boyle) Glover died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
Born in Stepney in London, Barrie was the son of Frederick Edward Glover and Violet (Henry) Glover. At a young age he was evacuated to Wales during the London Blitz. Where he was taken in by a childless couple on a farm who loved him greatly. There he enjoyed idyllic days of solitary adventure through the fields and Streams instead of going to school. He was brought back to London where he collected shrapnel by day and sheltering with his family under the stairs during the bombings.
He graduated in 1952 from Westminster Technical College for Hotel Cookery. He was an avid club cyclist travelling across Europe with his friends. He was particularly proud of one 900 KM ride he accomplished in 24 hours. He often recounted his time as a military conscript and taking naps under a bush to avoid training runs after coming out from working in the hot kitchens.
He soon got work at J Lyon's and Company, a British Catering Company in their executive kitchens where he was mentored by Saul Frimmer, a polish Jew who had escaped the Germans and Russians and later joined the British Airforce. It was here that he prepared a special British meal for a Russian delegation hosted by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip. Recounting often that it was in the executive kitchens where he first heard of President Kennedy's assassination. "All the waiters were weeping."
He met his future wife and they married in 1966 and in 1967 emigrated to Beverly, Massachusetts with a plan to stay for only five years. He and his wife were naturalized as US citizens in 1980. He worked to improve the menu's of restaurants and also at The Bay Club, a private club at the top of the Customs House in Boston. There he perfected his sugar work for competition and functions. Later he taught bakery and culinary arts at North Shore Vocational Technical School and Minuteman Tech. He retired from Manchester By-The-Sea schools where he prepared extraordinary lunches for the students and teachers.
Among his hobbies were fly casting fishing and woodcarving birds and fish. He was a member of the Diaconate of First Parrish Church in Beverly. He was for 47 years and 9 months a member of the Manchester Lodge A.F. & A.M. where he was a Past Master. On the morning of his death, his Masonic Brothers, Jimmy, Todd and Ferris attended to his Memorial Service at his bedside. Barrie was dressed in his Tuxedo and apron.
He also enjoyed shooting target at the Danvers Fish & Game Club until his passing. After the Sandy Hook Massacre he did not renew his membership in the NRA.
