Obituary

MASHPEE - Carolyn S. DesMarais, 86, formerly of Peabody, Topsfield, Saugus, and Middleton, passed away on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024, at her home in Mashpee after a brave battle with myasthenia gravis.

She was the daughter of the late Wilfred S. Desmarais and Eileen B. Desmarais of Topsfield. Carolyn graduated from Topsfield High, married the late Robert L. Hess, and raised her family in Saugus where she enjoyed a variety of part-time jobs while her daughters were growing up, including working at the Saugus High School cafeteria while they were there in attendance. She later enjoyed a fulfilling career as an Emergency Planner for the Department of Defense in South Boston.

She was an avid gardener and had a special talent for creating floral arrangements for friends and family. She also enjoyed joining in with spirit in singing at church, in the car, and at the kitchen table. She loved dogs and always had at least one canine friend in her life. Carolyn especially looked forward to family gatherings and trips of all types, and during her retirement she was finally able to make it to see Florida (St. Augustine) on an Amtrack trip with her two sisters and daughter Kathy. They also visited Savannah and Charleston along the way. Carolyn was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and will be deeply missed.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Kathy and her spouse, Kim Ferguson of Mashpee and her daughter, Carol A. LaVigueur of Hudson, NH. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Swindell-Lucas, sister, Sheila Whicher and her spouse, Cliff of Rowley, her two grandchildren, Matthew Lavigueur of Seattle, Washington and Amanda Lavigueur of Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as several nieces and nephews.
