TOPSFIELD - Celia M. Swindell, 90, of Topsfield, passed peacefully on March 16, 2026, at her home. Born in Peabody, she was the youngest daughter of 12 of the late Harry and Margaret (Cormeau) Gardner. Celia was raised and educated in Peabody, graduating from Peabody High School. In 1956, she made her home in Topsfield, where she became a cherished and enduring presence in the community for nearly seven decades.

Throughout her long and full life, Celia wore many hats — and wore each of them with quiet dignity. She served as a devoted homemaker, a waitress at the iconic Hilltop Steakhouse, a housecleaner, and a caretaker for elderly neighbors who were fortunate enough to have her in their corner. At her core, Celia was a caretaker in the truest sense of the word. She had an extraordinary, instinctive gift for seeing the needs of others before they could voice them, and an even greater gift for meeting those needs without expectation or fanfare. Whether it was a warm meal, a steady hand, or simply a compassionate presence, she gave of herself freely and completely. Remarkably, she did not slow down until well into her eighties, when she finally allowed herself the rest she had so long postponed.

At the very center of Celia’s life was her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Her relationship with the Lord was not simply a Sunday obligation — it was the foundation upon which she built every day, every decision, and every act of kindness. She carried her faith with a quiet strength that was evident to all who knew her, drawing from it a deep well of peace, purpose, and compassion. Her belief was never boastful, but it was unmistakable, woven into everything she did and everyone she served. Celia was a longtime, devoted, and active member of Hamilton Congregational Church, where she gave not only her attendance but her heart. The church was a true spiritual home for her, a community of believers she loved dearly and who loved her in return. Through her church family, her faith found its fullest expression — in service, in fellowship, and in a life lived for something far greater than herself.

In addition to her parents, Celia was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Nugent, Patricia Shannon, Virginia Wilson, and Charlotte Paradise, and her brothers, Larry Gardner, Francis Gardner, George Gardner, Lee Gardner, and Ralph Gardner.

Celia is survived by her cherished church family at Hamilton Congregational Church and by many dear friends, especially her longtime and treasured companions, Sue and Eldon Goodhue.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Matthew 25:23
