IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles B.
"Charlie" Walsh
February 6, 1931 – January 26, 2025
SALEM - Mr. Charles B. "Charlie" Walsh, 93, of Salem beloved husband of Joyce M. (Marshall) Walsh, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Danvers, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Margaret (Trainor) Walsh. From the age of 13 to 21 Charlie attended Seminary in Middletown, NY. He later continued his education at Salem State University where he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education.
An honorably discharged veteran, Charlie proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Korea War, where he received several medals and commendations for his brave service.
Charlie began his career as an English teacher predominately at the Pickering School. He went on to become one of the youngest elementary school principals appointed in the city of Salem, serving for over 35 years. At one time he served as Principal of the Carlton, Bentley, Cogswell, and Sheridan schools, all at the same time. His commitment to education and the well-being of his students was evident in every aspect of his career. Charlie was not just an educator; he was a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to generations of students and teachers alike. His profound impact on the community was further exemplified by his role in teaching night school for non-English speaking adults as he was fluent in several languages, and his involvement in establishing the Salem Children's Charity, which continues to support local children in need. In addition to his work in education, Charlie was an active member of the AARP in Salem, where he served as president, advocating for seniors in the community. His contributions extended to SATV, where he sat on the board and worked to ensure that local voices were heard. The warmth of his character shone through in every interaction; Charlie was known for his kindness, his social nature, and his willingness to help anyone who sought his aid. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, generosity, and commitment to community service that will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Surviving Charlie, in addition to his wife Joyce, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage is his daughter Lisa Walsh and her wife Susan Poublon of Sandown, NH and his son Charles B. Walsh II of Salem, his grandchildren, Charles B. Walsh III and his wife Danielle of CA, Joseph D. Walsh of Salem, his great-grandchildren, Charles IV, Ella, Caleb and Emilia, his siblings, Marjorie Reynolds and Brendan Walsh both of Salem and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late, Eleanor Walsh, Angela Doyle, John Walsh, Donald Walsh and James Walsh.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Kaplan Family Hospice House for their compassionate care and support of Charlie and our family.
