TOPSFIELD - Charlotte Mary O’Toole, 84, a devoted mother, physical therapist, beekeeper, volunteer, and lifelong friend to children everywhere, died peacefully on October 26, 2026 surrounded by her family. She spent her life caring for others, and the people and places she touched are better for it.
Born and raised in Albany, New York, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Margaret (Kirsch) O’Toole. Charlotte graduated from Vincentian Institute for High School in Albany. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from the College of Saint Rose and went on to complete a post-graduate certificate in physical therapy at the University of Pennsylvania.
The bulk of her professional career was spent at the Anne Sullivan Center in Lowell, where she specialized in early intervention for children from birth to three years old. Her particular focus was oral-motor feeding, helping the tiniest patients and their anxious parents with one of the most basic and essential challenges of early life. She served as an area chair for the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association and colleagues regarded her as an expert and a pioneer in the field.
Faith and service was central to Charlotte’s life. A lifelong Catholic and member of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Topsfield, she served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and dedicated volunteer. Her commitment to helping others extended beyond her church to organizations including service at Rosie’s Place women’s shelter in Boston, The BoxTop Shop, and the Appleton Farms Crop Share Program. She was especially proud to be a longtime blood and platelet donor at Boston Children’s Hospital, where she was recognized for donating more than five gallons to help sick and injured children.
Charlotte was a beekeeper, a member of the Essex County Beekeepers Association, and volunteered in its Bee School, where she happily shared what she knew with beginners. She won numerous awards at the Topsfield Fair for her honey and other beekeeping entries. She was adamant about protecting the environment and the pollinators she so admired, and never hesitated to speak up for them.
Charlotte could make almost anything with her hands. She enjoyed needlepoint, painting, soap and candle making, gardening, and creating teddy bears. She collected sand dollars and seashells from her beach walks and treasured her collection of Raggedy Ann dolls. In the early days of online marketplaces, she also became an enthusiastic eBay seller.
She never stopped moving. A swimmer, runner, kayaker, and cross-country skier, she embraced anything that kept her active, and she continued to do so well into her later years.
Those who knew Charlotte will remember her boundless energy, generous spirit, and unwavering belief that every child deserved the opportunity to thrive. Charlotte once said all that needed to be said about her life: “One hundred years from now, my possessions won’t matter, but I was important in the life of a child.”
Above all, she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, and the family she nurtured with such patience and warmth will carry her with them always.
In addition to her parents, Charlotte is predeceased by her sister, Maureen “Mickey” O’Toole Gomez, her brother-in-law, Peter Bailey, and her great nephew, Camden Bailey.
Charlotte is survived by her daughter, Briana Posanka and her husband Michael of Boxford, her son, William J. O’Toole of Marlborough, her grandchildren, Eleanor, Charles, and Andrew Posanka, her sister, Virginia Bailey of New Hampshire, her brother-in-law, Edgar “Buddy” Gomez of Texas, and her nieces and nephews, Kelly, Terry, and Chris Bailey, Tess Hawes, and Don, Matthew, and Michael Gomez.
