SALEM - Mr. Donald J. Lord 90, of Peabody, formerly of Salem, beloved husband of Mary (Bury) Lord passed away peacefully on Monday, November 4th, 2024 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary (Gallo) Lord. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School.
An honorably discharged veteran, Donald proudly served in country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Upon his return from the service, Donald embarked on a long and successful career with the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for over 30 years. Following his retirement from the Postal Service, he started D&L Newsstand in downtown Salem, where he was the first one to greet you in the morning with a big smile and an enthusiastic good morning. Don and his co-workers were always up on the latest news and if you ever wanted to know what was going on in the city you just had to stop by. When not selling papers or giving directions to tourists, Don enjoyed gardening and was very proud of his vegetable and flower gardens. He was an active member of the Christopher Columbus Club of Salem and was a huge sports fan. Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who will be deeply missed by his family and the many friends he made throughout his life.
Surviving Donald, in addition to his wife Mary with whom he shared 67 years of marriage, are his daughter, Patricia Nihan and her husband, Paul of Peabody, his son, John Lord and his wife, Tabatha of Belmont, NH, his grandchildren, Melissa Brown and her husband, Scott of Rochester, NH, Matt Nihan and his wife, Giulia of Hookset, NH, Kyle Nihan and his fiancé, Gabriella Sorenson of Salisbury, Stephen Lord and his wife, Kersia of Goffstown, NH, Amanda Nihan of Swampscott, Kirsten Flynn and her husband, Jay of Lynn, and Jessica Lord of Hellam, PA, his great-grandchildren, Jayden, McKenna & Emily Brown, Roslyn Nihan and Jamie Flynn, his brother, Richard "Lefty" Lord and his wife Corinne and his nephews Scott & Ryan Lord all of San Diego, CA.
ARRANGEMENTS: At the request of the family all services are private.
