Obituary

SAUGUS - Mr. Harold "Harry" E. Gately, Jr., 78, of Saugus, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with his loving family by his side.

Born in Lynn, Harold was the son of the late Harold E. Gately, Sr., and Mary A. (DeRosier) Brennan and stepson of the late Richard Brennan. He was raised and educated in Lynn, MA, having attended Lynn English High School as a member of the Class of 1963. He briefly continued his education at Wentworth Institute of Technology, taking courses in drafting.

Harry started his working life as a musician, playing the drums at schools, local clubs, and wedding venues. He soon moved on to selling insurance before starting his own small business specializing in painting, wallpaper, and flooring. Harry later transitioned into the restaurant industry, working as a manager at Bill & Bob's Roast Beef before his entrepreneurial spirit inspired him to open his own eatery. He was the proud co-owner and operator of Gately's Roast Beef in Tewksbury, MA, for 10 years. Harry finished his professional career working as an auto lathe machinist at GE Lynn for 10 years. He was a member of IUE-CWA LOCAL 201. A hard worker and jack of all trades, Harry could complete any task.

While his dedication to his various careers was admirable, what truly shone about Harry was his commitment to his loved ones. A dedicated father and grandfather, Harry spent many days at ice skating rinks, horse shows, gymnastics meets, and baseball fields. No matter what the event was, Harry was there.

As a member of the Lynn Yacht Club for 34 years, Harry was a lifelong boater and fisherman. His Penn Yan powerboat, Taaroa, was the perfect vessel for long days on the water. Later in life, Harry enjoyed participating in club races around the North Shore with family and friends aboard the Whisper, his 30 ft Erickson sloop. He could also frequently be found inside the Yacht Club, enthralled in a competitive game of pool or enjoying a weekly game of golf with his LYC foursome.

A talented musician, Harry's love for music persisted throughout his life. He was spectacular on the drums, xylophone, and other percussion instruments. He was particularly passionate about jazz music.

Harold will be deeply missed by his daughters, Karen Gately Herrick and her husband, Stephen Herrick, of Reading, Kelly Radochia and her husband, Michael Radochia, of Topsfield, Kristen Gately Erickson and her husband, Dennis Erickson, of Boston; brother Thomas Gately and his wife, Joann Gately, of Danvers; sisters Patricia Kessler of Rowley; Annette Robinson and her husband, Stephen Robinson, of Exeter; grandchildren, Madeleine Herrick, Mikaela Radochia, Jack Radochia, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
