SALEM - Mr. James “Jim” R. Chisholm, 87 of Salem, beloved husband of Joanne (Mosey) Chisholm, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2025 at Care One in Beverly, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Winthrop MA, Jim was the son of the late James and Margaret (Hanely) Chisholm. He was raised and educated in Revere, MA and was a graduate of Revere High School. James received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Northeastern University. He later attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Massachusetts College of Art where he received his Master of Science in Art Education.
Jim taught drawing, painting and design from 1973 at various institutions such as Harvard University Extension School, The Museum of Fine Arts of Boston, Endicott College in Beverly, the University of New Hampshire, and finally North Shore Community College. Jim retired in 2019 as Professor of the Art and Design Department from North Shore Community College where he inspired many young minds for nearly two decades.
A renowned artist, Jim painted and drew everyday, however he was passionate about drawing and painting outdoors. He found great solace in being outside surrounded by nature. The only thing he enjoyed more than creating art was teaching others and helping them develop their talents. His many works of art have been displayed in the collection of Harvard University’s Grossman Library, North Shore Community College and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Four of his oil paintings were also included in the New York exhibition “The Persistence of Form”, an honor he was particularly proud of. He published an article in “American Artist” magazine on landscape painting and drawing and was selected for an exhibition at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts that celebrated 100 years of graduates and faculty art from the museum’s renowned art school, Boston Museum School.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Jim will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the art community. Future generations will know of his legacy through his commitment to education and his dedication to art.
In addition to his loving wife Joanne, with whom he shared 60 + years of marriage, Jim is survived by his children, James D. Chisholm of Woburn, Denise M. Antony of Canton, Maine and Charlene Palecki of Salem, his grandson, Connor D. Antony and his fiancée Catherine Taylor of Salem, his sister, Jean Currie of Salem, NH, his brother-in-law Robert Mosey and wife Lisa Mosey of Gorham, Maine and several nieces and nephews.
