Janet Marie (Cameron) Madsen

BEVERLY-Janet Cameron Madsen of Beverly, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026.

Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, Janet later made her home in Salem, a place that held a special place in her heart. She loved Salem for its rich history and character, and she enjoyed spending time there exploring and appreciating everything the city had to offer.

She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Lynn. In her younger years, she worked at Hoffman’s in Lynn, where she dressed mannequins and developed her lifelong love of fashion and style. She later went into real estate.

Janet was a woman who lived life on her own terms. She was fiercely independent and remained so until the very end. She disliked having to depend on anyone and took great pride in being able to do things for herself. She was still driving at 86 years old—a testament to her determination, independence, and adventurous spirit. She loved to travel and was always ready for an adventure. Janet loved exploring new places, spending time at the beach, being surrounded by nature, and discovering something new. She had a deep appreciation for photography and the fine arts, and she enjoyed capturing the beauty she saw around her. Whether it was a beautiful landscape, an interesting historic place, wildlife, or a special moment with family, Janet had an eye for finding beauty in the world around her. She was also a devoted animal lover and generously supported numerous animal causes.

Some of her happiest moments were spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved taking them bird watching, bringing them to the beach to collect shells and sea glass, and sharing with them her love and appreciation for nature. Through photography, exploring, and these little adventures, she encouraged them to notice the beauty in the world around them. These memories will be treasured by her family for generations.

Janet was also known for her strong voice and independent spirit. She was outspoken, believed passionately in women’s rights and equality, and was never afraid to say what she thought. She had no filter and always told you exactly how she felt. Those who knew her knew that Janet was unapologetically herself. She had an unmistakable sense of style and always loved looking her best. She enjoyed dressing well, doing her hair and makeup, and keeping up with the latest trends. Her style, confidence, and personality made her unforgettable.

Janet was the beloved mother of the late Lisa Kirk Toomey and her late husband, James Toomey; the late Raymond Kirk; and Brian Kirk. She was a cherished grandmother to Melissa Kirk Nolan and her husband, Tommy Nolan; Amanda Kirk; Taryn Chandler and Tim Clements; Jessica Chase and her husband, Jared Hnath; Christopher Chandler; Ryan Kirk; the late Candace Chandler; and the late RJ Kirk. She was also a loving great-grandmother to many great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life. Janet was the sister of Geraldine Payne and Thomas Cameron and his wife, Mary. She was the daughter of Ralph Cameron and Geraldine Clement Cameron, and the stepdaughter of Malvina Fortin Cameron. She was also a beloved aunt to Matthew Cameron and his wife, Laurie, and Michael Cameron and his wife, Cyndi.

Janet will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, fierce independence, love of family, passion for photography and the fine arts, love of animals and nature, sense of style, and willingness to speak her mind. She lived her life fully and authentically, leaving behind countless memories. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
