Obituary

NEWBURYPORT - Jean M. (Raymond) O'Leary, 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 24th, 2025, at Port Healthcare, surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Salem, Massachusetts, she was the devoted daughter of the late Ruth and Leslie Raymond. Her mother Ruth was not only her rock, but her constant companion in life—a bond that defined Jean's strength, love, and spirit.

A dedicated and selfless mother, Jean raised her four children as a single parent, doing everything in her power to ensure their happiness and success. She is survived by her son, Ronald O'Leary; her daughter, Sharon Saunders and husband, Steve; her son, Jim O'Leary and wife, Jill; and her son, John O'Leary and wife, Tracy. Jean's legacy lives on through her 12 cherished grandchildren and 8 beloved great-grandchildren, all of whom were her greatest pride and joy.

Jean was predeceased by her brother, Al Raymond and is survived by her siblings: her sister, Beverly Wodarski and husband, Buddy of Peabody, her brother, Bobby Raymond and wife, Donna of Salem, and her sister, Debbie Fitt of Florida. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will miss her deeply. Jean was the cousin of the late Virginia Lavoie "Jinny-Ann" and niece to the late Virginia Lavoie "Aunt Gigi", with whom she shared countless treasured memories.

Despite never having a driver's license, Jean never missed a single sporting event. Whether rain, snow, sleet, or sweltering heat, she always found a way to cheer on her children and grandchildren from the sidelines. Her fierce loyalty and love made her a fixture in the stands—and in their hearts.

Jean loved the Salem Willows and the Lavoie family pool, especially on the Fourth of July, when she would be surrounded by friends and family decked out in red, white, and blue. Holidays were sacred to Jean, not for the traditions alone, but for the promise of being gathered together with those she loved.

She shared many unforgettable trips to Disney World with her children and grandchildren—experiences filled with laughter and joy that will be remembered for generations.

In her later years, Jean made a new home at Port Healthcare, where she built lasting friendships. Known for her daily bingo games and her shoebox-sized bag of nickels, she brought her vibrant spirit and sense of humor everywhere she went. She loved word searches and, most of all, bragging about her grandchildren—everyone at Port Healthcare knew exactly how proud she was.

Jean O'Leary was a strong, proud, and fiercely loving woman. She was tough as nails, full of life, and endlessly devoted to her family. Her presence, warmth, and unshakable love will be missed more than words can express.
