Obituary

DANVERS – Mrs. Joan Ellen (Bartley) Benjamin, 87 of Danvers, loving wife of the late Rodger R. Benjamin passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 21st, 2024 at Hillsborough County Nursing Home in Goffstown, New Hampshire with her loving family by her side.

Born in Andover, Joan was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Catherine (McCallin) Bartley. She was raised and educated in Andover and was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School in Lawrence.

As a young woman, Joan worked as a secretary for Raytheon where she met her husband, Rodger. Together they would share 60 years of marriage, building a home and raising a loving family. A homemaker was the foundation of who Joan was, a loving wife, mother and grandmother who provided a beautiful, warm and cozy home for her family.

Devoted to her catholic faith, Joan was actively involved in the St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish community. After her mother's passing, Joan established "the giving tree" within the church, providing holiday presents for residents of Hogan Regional Center. Additionally, she and her husband taught CCD classes and each year the family participated in supporting the Annual St. Mary's School Christmas Fair.

Extremely thoughtful, Joan showed her appreciation to others by writing supportive, kind notes to family and friends. She read the Boston Globe daily and enjoyed baking, a delicious brownie or her signature o'henry bars.

A true lover of the new England weather, Joan enjoyed a storm rolling though, rain or snow and enjoyed being outdoors in nature or at the beach. She loved a shopping day with the "girls" or spending hours in her beautiful flower gardens, tending to her yard that enhanced her gorgeous home. Extremely generous and giving, Joan lived her life treating everyone with respect and instilled strong values within her family that allows her legacy to live on in all the lives she touched. She will be deeply missed by many.

Surviving Joan are her daughters, Lizabeth K. Benjamin of Newburyport, Marguerite Hopey and her husband, Richard of New Boston, NH; her grandchildren, Brendan C. Auth and his fiancé, Ashley Olson, Laurel K. Auth, Jack M. Hopey and Eathan R. Hopey and her beloved great-grandson, Sawyer C. Auth. Joan was predeceased by her beloved son, Gregory W. Benjamin, her husband Rodger R. Benjamin and her brothers, Joseph C. Bartley, John F. Bartley and William Bartley.
