TOPSFIELD – Joyce (Anderson) Cryan, 67, beloved wife of Ron Cryan, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026 in Danvers with her family by her side. Born in Providence, RI she was the daughter of the late Lars H.V. and Lillian (Spencer) Anderson.
Joyce was raised and educated in Cranston, RI, a proud graduate of Cranston West High School where she was valedictorian of her class. She went on to attend Brown University, where she earned her PhD in Mathematics, a remarkable achievement that spoke to her sharp intellect and quiet determination. She began her teaching career at Tufts University before joining the mathematics faculty at Salem State University, where she shaped the minds of countless students.
When her children, Darren and Marcus, were born, Joyce made the choice to leave academia and pour her heart into motherhood. It was a role she embraced fully, and one in which she found her greatest joy. She was the parent who showed up, volunteering for anything and everything her boys were part of.
In her younger years, Joyce was an avid cyclist, riding with the North Shore Cyclists. Every year, she looked forward to ski trips with her husband, Ron, and the kids — cherished family traditions that became some of her fondest memories. Her faith was also central to her life, and she was a devoted member of the Middleton Congregational Church and ran the children’s Sunday School program for about 15 years.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 28 years, Ron Cryan of Topsfield, her sons, Marcus Cryan of Dover, NH, and Darren Cryan of Topsfield, and her brother, Lars Anderson of Cranston, RI.
