SALEM - Laura Colby Luckey, a distinguished museum director, curator, scholar, and advocate for American art, passed away peacefully at her home in Salam MA on March 26, 2026, with her two Siamese cats “Otis & Nellie” by her side. She leaves a legacy defined by intellectual rigor, quiet leadership, and a deep devotion to cultural stewardship.

Laura was born in 1937 in Beijing, China, to Marine Corps General Robert B. Luckey and Cary D. Luckey. Her early life, shaped by a deep intellectual curiosity, informed a lifelong commitment to history, culture, and the arts. She was the beloved older sister of Thomas W. Luckey and William C. Luckey, both of whom predeceased her.

Laura devoted her professional life to the preservation, interpretation, and advancement of American art and museums. Her career spanned more than two decades at some of the nation’s most respected cultural institutions. From 1987 onward, she served as Director of the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont, where she provided full administrative and fiscal leadership for a staff of more than twenty and oversaw an operating budget of $800,000. Under her guidance, the museum undertook significant building expansion and renovation, completed a major feasibility study, strengthened community ties, expanded educational programming, and successfully raised over $500,000 in new federal, foundation, and individual funding.

Prior to her directorship, Laura held senior leadership roles including Assistant Director for Collections and Programs at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, Associate Director and Curator of American Paintings at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, and multiple curatorial positions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her work encompassed exhibitions, acquisitions, conservation, gallery installations, grant writing, and scholarly research, contributing to the interpretation of American art for both academic audiences and the general public.

Laura was deeply committed to professional service and mentorship within the museum field. She served on advisory committees for the New England Archives of American Art, the Northeast Document Conservation Center, and the American Association of Museums, among many others. She was an active member of regional and national arts organizations and contributed her expertise as a reviewer, consultant, and board member throughout New England.

An accomplished scholar, Laura authored and contributed to numerous publications on American painting and portraiture, with articles appearing in Antiques and The American Art Journal, as well as exhibition catalogues and museum publications. Her scholarship reflected both precision and a deep respect for the historical narratives embedded in works of art.

Laura earned her Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the College of William & Mary, her Master of Arts in Art History from Boston University, and completed executive leadership training through the American Management Association.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Laura will be remembered for her thoughtful presence, her commitment to excellence, and her belief in museums as living institutions—places of learning, community, and care. Her legacy lives on in the institutions she shaped, the exhibitions she brought to life, and the many colleagues and students she mentored throughout her career.

She is survived by her seven nieces and nephews: Owen S. Luckey, Spencer W. Luckey, Kit A. Luckey, and Walker M. Luckey of Connecticut; and A. Anna Luckey, Carey A. Luckey, and Benjamin M. Luckey of Massachusetts.

She is lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives were enriched by her work and dedication.
