BEVERLY - Linda Sue Goodale of Beverly, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on November 10th, 2024 at Kaplan Family Hospice House. She celebrated her 72nd birthday on Friday with a tea party.
Linda was born in Beverly, to Alton P. Goodale and Ann Louise Swinerton. The family moved to the Goodale homestead on King Street in Middleton.
Linda grew up in the close-knit community of Middleton. She sang in the church choir and enjoyed local holiday festivities. She was a graduate of Masconomet Regional High School in 1970 and was active in band and theatrical productions. She had life long interest in local and family history.
Her interest in nursing started when she was a candy-striper at Hunt Memorial Hospital. She attended Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital nursing school in Hanover, NH. A dedicated student, she graduated with honors as an RN in 1973. She later earned a bachelor degree in nursing from Northeastern University and a master's degree in Maternal Child Health from Boston College. Her wide-ranging career in Nursing included ER work at Children's Hospital, managing a state-wide SIDS support system, Pediatric Nurse Manager at Boston City Hospital and Nursing Director at Solomon Carter Fuller Psychiatric hospital. She was on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Nursing Association and later on the board of Hospice of the North Shore , now Care Dimensions. She taught Nursing at Salem State, MGH and North Shore Community College from where she retired as full Professor. She was a gifted teacher. The skill, dedication and caring she showed to her students and patients was acknowledged by the wide range of friends who will miss her dearly.
In 1981, she joined the Army Corps of Nurses where she served with the 309th combat support hospital under the 804th Medical Brigade at Fort Devens. She retired in 2003 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Linda is survived by her sons, Alex and Andrew and her former husband, Thomas Furth, as well as her sisters, Donna Goodale of Edgartown and Beth MacRae of Franklin, many nieces, nephews extended family and dear friends. She was grateful to her medical team and caregivers for their care and kindness.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service will be held at O'Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 167 Maple St., (rte 62) DANVERS, Saturday, Nov. 23rd at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Danvers. Visiting hours Friday, Nov. 22nd from 4 to 7 P.M. and prior to the service on Saturday, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923.
