Obituary

TOPSFIELD – Mrs. Lorraine A. (Smith) Flynn, 80, of Topsfield, beloved wife of David Flynn, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Lawrence, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy (Andrews) & Frank Smith. Raised and educated in Topsfield, Lorraine was a graduate of Masconomet Regional High School (class of 1964) and went on to continue her education at Essex County Agricultural School, where she received her degree in Cosmetology. A lifelong resident of Topsfield, she was deeply rooted in her community and cherished the town she called home. The youngest of five children, Lorraine was predeceased by her siblings Gordon Smith, Milton Smith, Beverly Hills and Audrey Fessenden.

Lorraine built a fulfilling career as a hairdresser, dedicating more than 50 years to the beauty industry. She was known for her talent, but even more for her warmth and compassion, turning every appointment into a visit filled with kindness and friendship. Her clients became part of her extended family, and she took joy in making each one feel valued. Lorraine's kindness extended to the elderly in her community. In her younger years, she would routinely ride her bike to Little Brook Village to style the hair of residents who couldn't get out to the salon, ensuring they too felt cared for and beautiful.

A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, family was the center of Lorraine's world. She treasured every holiday and milestone shared together. She and her husband, David ("Butch"), met at Plum Island when they were just children and shared nearly 60 years of marriage. They were looking forward to celebrating their anniversary this October. Together, they shared many adventures - camping, boating, the beach, long distance road trips and bowling among them. They especially loved their time at their summer home on Great East Lake, where countless memories were made with family and friends.

Lorraine also gave freely of her time and talents. She proudly founded a local 4-H chapter, serving as a leader and inspiring young people through lessons of hard work, creativity, and friendship. Gifted with her hands, she was a talented seamstress, knitter, crocheter and quilter. Her artistic eye carried into other passions as well—she loved painting, refurbishing furniture, gardening and even building stone walls. Her nurturing spirit touched many, whether through her artistry, her caregiving or her willingness to help friends, family and neighbors in need. She always welcomed everyone into her home with love (and plenty of food!).

Lorraine will be remembered for her unwavering love of family, her generosity and the kindness she shared with everyone who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and creativity that will be deeply missed.

Surviving Lorraine in addition to her husband David of Topsfield are her children, Shawn Flynn and his wife Robin of Tamworth, NH and Callie Umenhofer and her husband Rick of Georgetown, along with her grandchildren, Alexander and Timothy Flynn of Tamworth, NH and Lindsay and Mitchell Umenhofer of Georgetown.
