IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret Helen
(Inglis) Smith
June 14, 1926 – August 23, 2024
TOPSFIELD – Mrs. Margaret (Inglis) Smith, 98 of Topsfield, wife of the late James Smith, died peacefully, Friday, August 23rd, 2024.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Janet (McDougall) Inglis. She was raised and educated in Glasgow. During WWII at the age of 14 she was evacuated out of Glasgow to the countryside where she picked potatoes in support of the war effort.
Following the end of WW II, she was a factory worker, first making cigarettes then as an assembler making Smith clocks. During her married life she lived in London, England, East Kilbride, Scotland, Boucherville, Quebec, Long Island, NY then moved to Topsfield in 1967, where she has since resided. She was well known in the Steward School lunch room where she worked for many years. With all of the places she traveled and resided, Margaret kept her Scottish roots deep in her heart. She was proud of her heritage and still spoke with a Scottish brogue even in her 98th year.
She was hearty as the Scottish countryside, a cancer survivor who was never one to do something half-measure, a tireless worker if there was something to be done. A loving and devoted, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Margaret was dedicated to her family. She took great pride in making a warm and welcoming home for her brood. At the end of the day when she could sit down, she was an avid knitter and enjoyed sewing and crochet.
Margaret and James were well known throughout Topsfield for their beautiful gardens on Winsor Lane in which they took great pride. They could often be found laboring outside, side by side, with their beloved canine companion Mookie, greeting the neighbors as they walked by.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Heather Betts and her husband, Cam of Strong, Maine, her sons, J. Gordon Smith and his wife, Andrea of Monroe, Ct, Andrew G. Smith and his wife, Yulia of Boxford, her 10 grandchildren, Chris and Ethan Betts, Eric, Brian, Kimberly, Jim, Kira, Shane, Tyler and Hannah Smith, 2 step-grandchildren, Amy and Dan Barthelemy and 5 great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Graham F. Smith and Steven C. Smith and sister of the late James Inglis.
