SALEM – Ms. Maria Consuelo Espaillat, 91, of Salem, died peacefully at home on Friday, August 14, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, she was the daughter of the late Federico and Lucia Bido Espaillat. She was raised and educated in Santiago before immigrating to the United States in 1962, initialing settling in New York. In 1982, she and her family moved to Salem and made it their forever home. Maria cherished the Dominican community on the North Shore, where many of her friends and relatives resided.
Ms. Espaillat was employed as a cook for many years across various restaurants and kitchens, most recently spending many dedicated years at Henry’s Market in Beverly. She loved her customers and co-workers and remained a valued member of the Henry’s Market team until her retirement.
A longtime resident of Salem, Maria was an avid bingo player. Faith was central to her life, and she lived each day by God’s word. Devoted above all to her family, she relished the time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and was happiest with them by her side. As the proud matriarch of a large and loving family, she was admired for her strength of character—a trait reflected in her deep passion for elephants, which symbolized her resilient spirit and immense love. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Maria is survived by her children: Robert A. Cabrera and his wife, Angela, of Salem; Dario Gonell and his wife, Karen, of Salem; and Ana L. Gonell of Salem; her 10 grandchildren: Javi, Cindy, Jonathan, Kyanna, Raphy, Dario, Kiangeli, Vivi, Darianna, and Daria; her great-grandchildren: Elsa, Mia, Antonio, Jayceon, Emilia, John, and Kayden; her siblings: Victor and Emma Espaillat; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son Jovanni De Jesus Cabrera, her great-grandson, Jax, and seven of her siblings.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours at O’Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 84 Washington Square, (at Salem Common) SALEM, Wednesday, August 19th from 4 to 7 P.M. Her funeral Mass and burial will take place in Santiago, Dominican Republic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Care Hospice - allcare.org . SALEM – La Sra. María Consuelo Espaillat, de 91 años y residente de Salem, falleció pacíficamente en su hogar el viernes 14 de agosto de 2026, rodeada de su amada familia.
Nacida en Santiago, República Dominicana, era hija de los difuntos Federico y Lucía Bido Espaillat. Creció y se educó en Santiago antes de emigrar a los Estados Unidos en 1962, estableciéndose inicialmente en Nueva York. En 1982, ella y su familia se mudaron a Salem, donde hicieron de ella su hogar definitivo. María apreciaba profundamente a la comunidad dominicana de la Costa Norte, donde residían muchos de sus amigos y familiares.
La Sra. Espaillat trabajó como cocinera durante muchos años en diversos restaurantes y cocinas, y más recientemente dedicó muchos años a su labor en Henry's Market en Beverly. Amaba a sus clientes y compañeros de trabajo y siguió siendo una valiosa integrante del equipo de Henry's Market hasta su jubilación.
Residente de Salem por muchos años, María era una ávida jugadora de bingo. La fe fue fundamental en su vida, y vivió cada día según la palabra de Dios. Dedicada sobre todo a su familia, disfrutaba enormemente del tiempo que pasaba con sus hijos, nietos y bisnietos, y era inmensamente feliz con ellos a su lado. Como orgullosa matriarca de una familia numerosa y amorosa, era admirada por su fortaleza de carácter, cualidad que se reflejaba en su profunda pasión por los elefantes, que simbolizaban su espíritu resiliente y su inmenso amor. Gonell, de Salem; sus 10 nietos: Javi, Cindy, Jonathan, Kyanna, Raphy, Dario, Kiangeli, Vivi, Darianna y Daria; sus bisnietos: Elsa, Mia, Antonio, Jayceon, Emilia, John y Kayden; y sus hermanos: Victor y Emma Espaillat. y numerosos sobrinos y sobrinas.
Le precedieron en la muerte su hijo Jovanni De Jesus Cabrera, su bisnieto Jax y siete de sus hermanos.
SERVICIOS FUNERARIOS: Familiares y amigos están invitados a la velación en O’Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 84 Washington Square (esquina con Salem Common), SALEM, el miércoles 19 de agosto de 4:00 p. m. a 7:00 p. m.
