PEABODY - Mrs. Maria Manuela (Neves) Lopes, 98 formerly of Belmont, beloved wife of the late Joao Ferreira Lopes, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2023, at Brooksby Village in Peabody.

Born in Horta, Portugal she was the daughter of the late, Manuel Castro and Maria (Amorim) Neves. She was raised and educated in Portugal, prior to immigrating to the United States 1969. Maria and her family settled in Cambridge and eventually Belmont.

Mrs. Lopes had been employed as a line technician for the Hewlett Packard Company for over 25 years of dedicated service to the company prior to her retirement in 1995.

Growing up with brothers, Maria was naturally a bit of a "tom-boy" and enjoyed the competition.  As an adult she was fiercely independent and brought her competitive skills to the card table. She was an avid Bridge player and belonged to several Bridge Clubs in the Belmont area. Gardening was a passion and Maria enjoyed tending to her flower gardens in Belmont. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother who was involved in her family's many activities and who would never leave the house unless she was "properly" dressed. Maria was a dedicated volunteer for the Belmont Senior Center for several years. She will be deeply missed.

Surviving Maria is her son, Manuel Lopes and his wife, Kathleen of Danvers, beloved Vovó to her three grandchildren, Bailey Margaret Lopes, Jeffrey Joao Lopes, and Lauren Catherine Lopes, her brother, Ricardo Neves of Portugal, her sister-in-law, Judite Neves of Arlington and her niece, Judite Haut of New Jersey.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass which will be held in St. Richard's Church, Forest St., Danvers on Saturday, January 7th at 10 A.M. Please meet directly at the church. Burial is private. Visiting hours at O'Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) DANVERS on Friday, January 6th from 4 to 7 P.M.
