Obituary

SALEM - María Esperanza Nuncio died at home in Salem on October 22nd, 2024, in the company of her loving sisters. María is survived by her sisters, Cristina Nuncio and Ana Nuncio (and her husband, Timothy Kenslea), of Salem; her niece, Emily Nuncio Schick, of Galesburg, Illinois; her nephew, Robert Nuncio Schick (and his wife, Erin Ford), of Brooklyn; her brother-in-law, William Schick, of Galesburg; and many loving cousins across the USA and Mexico.

María is predeceased by her younger sister, Luz Nuncio Schick, her mother, María Esperanza Nuncio Garza, and her father, Reynaldo Nuncio Armas.

María was born on April 24th, 1951, in Monterrey, Mexico. She arrived in the United States with her family in December 1956. Through her father's employment with International Telephone & Telegraph Company, the family also relocated to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from 1960 until 1963.

After the family's return to Chicago, María attended public schools, graduating from Jones Commercial High School in 1971. María's warm and sociable manner landed her a job at New York Life Insurance Company in Chicago, where she served as a receptionist for 27 years.

In 2001, María moved to Salem to join her sister Ana. They lived in their beloved Salem Willows neighborhood for 15 years before moving to downtown Salem.

María's extraordinary people skills and love of infants led her to volunteer at The Cradle Adoption Agency in Evanston, Illinois, and at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Salem Hospital, where she loved to cuddle babies. She formed strong bonds with other volunteers and treasured those friendships all her life.

María also loved to travel. Her childhood memories of Mexico and Puerto Rico sparked this passion, and she traveled to Spain, England, Florida, Hawaii, and Niagara Falls.
